Car Insurance companies/Rental Car???

Ok, long story short.....my neighbor plowed her car into my parked car, backing out of her driveway. The husband knocked on my door, asked if we could handle the matter individualy rather than insurance.I said ok, he asked to get him estimates in which I did.Fastfoward a few weeks and his insurance company calls saying that he now rather deal with this thru them.....whatever, I just want my car fixed. So the appraiser is coming over tomorrow, and they offered me a rental car(3-4 days of work needed)

Lets say all is good and i accept the $$ for repairs. Can I dictate to them when I want to do the work(I prefer May 15th-19th) so I can use the nice new rental on my PJ road trip to Hartford,Boston on my way back to the NYC area???

Do you think they will put a mileage restriction on this? I'm just trying to gather some info on those who went thru similar situations. I need a new fender, and I was told by all body shops I went to that they would do their best to blend the color....might be tough!!

I figured going thru this runaround, the least I can get for my troubles is a rental to take on the road to see the great PJ

Thanks(still scratching my head on how this chick in a SUV did this to my Honda)

When the Mexican government cleans up their act and restores some order down there, I'll keep that in mind ;)

it depends on when the insurance company pays out and when the shop can do the work. Some insurance companies set a timeline. Ask when they do the estimate. I don't think that you can stretch it out until May. That may be pushing it.

That's what I'm thinking too... if it was April 15th, you could probably stall until then, but May is a long time away.

    Mileage shouldn't be a problem.

I used to work for a car rental company so I might be able to help...

    - Where do you live? They will likely ask if you're traveling out of state and that could influence the unlimited mileage. If you live in CT, adding NY and MA probably won't be an issue. If you live in PA or ME, say, it could be dicey.

    - If you come up with a plausible excuse for the delay, the insurance company and shop may go for it. It's less than two months out, so if the car is drivable, you might be ok. Maybe work-related stuff...get creative.

    - The body shop will give the insurance company an estimate on how long the repairs will take. Unless there are legitimate delays, the insurance company will only pay that many days of rental. If your car is finished before you return, there's a good chance you may be on the hook for any extra rental days. (Not too much $$ if it's only a couple days, so that's kinda your call.)

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks everyone :):)

    pjl44 thanks for the input!!

I wish we would have dealt with this right away, if they didnt live accross the street I would have insisted on going thru insurance. I think they are dopes for paying a deductable and having their rates most likely going up.But thats his call. Its $1200 in damage. Since its almost April I figured pushing this off until may 15th wouldnt be such a stretch. I live in NY and do travel out of state for work on occasion.Am I wrong in insisting a certain time frame since I am very busy at work, and May's around the corner? I feel I dealt with him/wife in a friendly manner, and they are screwing around. I'm gonna try to get the best outcome for me at this point.

    We'll see

    Thanks again
