Sound Cards?

I listen to music all day every and not just in mp3 format, i also listen to FLACs and SHNs for live shows. I have considered getting a sound card but i have read that they don't make a difference necessarily because everyone's brains are wired differently so to speak.
I think I'm up for spending around £40 and anything more IF it's really worth it. I dont record music or anything, just simply play it through my speakers (which are Creative THX Sound works ones, i only have the 2.1 set up and have no desire to add 5.1).
