Greatest second acts in music history

Meaning an artist, musician, band whatever, who hits it big, falls apart, but then comes back and has equal or greater success than in the first act.

The one that comes to mind is dave grohl. not too much can top being in the most important band in the 1990's, and creating such amazing music that the music will without a doubt be talked about in 50, 100 years. then to have it all end so tragically. Cut to the first Foo's record, Dave does everything himself, plays every single instrument himself, and creates a classic album, only 1 year after the death of kurt, and most likely the hardest year of his life. Now in 2010, the foo's are one of the most famous bands in the world, can sell out arenas and have sold millions of records worldwide. One could make the case that most people know dave as ____ fill in the blank pick your musical project dave has done, rather than being "the drummer from nirvana.

You have in addition to the foo's, dave's heavy metal album as Probot, you have his work with Tenacious D, you have his work with Queens, and you now have a supergroup Them Crooked Vultures.

Dave is often called the nicest guy in rock, and i am inclined to believe it. despite everything the guy has been through, the tragedy of losing a good friend, and in such a horrific manner, and despite the fact the guy is friends with Led Zep, he still seems like a regular guy. a normal guy.

First one that leaps to mind is Aerosmith. Huge in the 70s, completely implode in the early 80s. Come back with much more success in the late 80s, early 90s.

    Darryl Hall and John Oats.

Their song "Maneater" has even more resonance today than it did in the 80's.

I would have to go with Aerosmith on this one as well.

Aerosmith, as much as it's amazing what Dave did, he was never really AWAY (the first Foos album came out in 1995?). I view him more like Jack White, just one of the hardest working men and most talented musicians in showbusiness.

Uh, Bob Dylan? Many regard the majority of his late 70's and 80's work as subpar. But since Time Out Of Mind, he has put out nothing but quality material.

Flaming Lips. Written off as a novelty band in '93 with "She Don't Use Jelly", came back to critical prominence wtih Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots. I don't think anyone thought they'd still be around, let alone playing to the size of crowds that they do.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

True. Neil has probably had 3rd, 4th, and 5th acts. Dylan too.

Another vote for Aerosmith....I feel that you can't count Neil Young as having a second act due to the fact that it is Neil himself that is always making changes or trying something new...it's not a drug problem or a break-up, it's just Neil trying something different.

agree with Aerosmith and RHCP. I might throw in Metallica or U2 (album wise). How about Dave Mathews? Would throw in STP but based on recent events, maybe not
