... it saddens me to hear fans who simply wanted them to make Dookie over and over again. How boring that would have been.
This is exactly what the problem is with the new album. It is American Idiot all over again. American Idiot was their cash cow in 2004, just as Dookie was their cash cow in 1994.
Green Day followed up Dookie with Insomniac which was Dookie with a "harder edge" to it in order to appease fans who said they weren't punk and it bombed.
From 1998 - 2004 they were out of the limelight and were just making music that they wanted to write and they were great albums. Now they're back in the spotlight and they're trying to stay there by re-releasing the same album.
So essentially they are re-releasing Dookie(or whatever cash cow album they come out with) over and over again and, as you've said, that is quite boring.
LOVED Dookie when I was a freshman in HS. I got to see them 2 years later on Halloween in a bar that held 500 people. Great show. Amazed they they got huge again. Not really into them anymore.
This show, another show, a show here and a show there.
I'm amazed at their longevity and have always admired their work. Their first two albums were part of my soundtrack of the 90's. American Idiot was great, the newer one good but doesn't have the impact of AI. But I like that although they really haven't changed their sound all that much they've at least grown some lyrically. Really, do you all still want to hear about their fucked up relationships and masturbation? Their are plenty of crappy bands out there that can do that.
I love Dookie, think its an incredible album. Nimrod is ace, 21st century break down is great too. I'm gonna see them finally as Dookie is one of the first albums i adored, when i was 12 or something so gonna be good to finally see them. I should check out their earlier stuff though i think, i only remember listening to american idiot once and probably theres probably a good reason why i havent heard it more.
