Confused about S/T, Avocado?

I can't seem to explain it but the self titled album is very rarely played in my house compared to any of the others. I'm sure I listened to it a lot when it was released but this is always the case with a new PJ album. There's something about it that puts me off a bit and I don't think it's the songs? There's not a song I'd say was bad and the lyrics, music are pretty much up to scratch but something on the album just doesn't speak to me. It sounded amazing played start to finish in Italy 06 so maybe it's the production that doesn't capture the true sound of PJ? One of my mates reckoned instead of an Avocado on the cover it should have had an amp head with everything turned up to 11. Anyone else here feel this way? :?

  • people say the production sucks, but on my crappy stereo all production sucks.

i still like the first half and i've started listening to it again. I think the polished and poppy BS makes me appreciate the rough sounding first half of ST a bit more.

still dont care to listen to anything on the second half.
  • i really don't know why i never play that album. it's my LEAST favorite pearl jam album but i don't know why exactly. i mean, the songs are ok, some i even like, but i just don't connect with it. i hardly ever play it and if i'm listening to pearl jam on shuffle i just skip avocado songs. i love watching them being played live but...

i dunno. i'm with you. i don't know why, but me and avocado just don't mix for some reason. (insert guacamole joke here)

For some reason with all new PJ albums, I listen constantly for a few months and then don't listen at all for a couple months. When I listen again, I seem to enjoy it more than the first time. This then happens with all their albums. I'll cycle one in for a while, and when I first start listening again I always find each album absolutely amazing again and again.
I am lost, I'm no guide, but I'm by your side

I'm with you. Not a huge fan of a lot of the second half, but some of the songs on the first half I love as much as anything the band has ever come out with. I could listen to Severed Hand every day for the rest of my life and never get sick of it, and I'll be one happy camper if they play it in New Orleans.
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

    no I love that album
I was in my truck cd player for over a year and played "some" if not "lots" if not "all" each day
It is awesome - hell Spin or Rolling Stone rated it the #1 must underrated album of 2000 to 2010
It is Pearl Jam through and through and like each new Pearl Jam none of "us" thinks its as good as the our favs - then after some time has passed we all "re-discover" the albums and find out just how awesome they are.
Pearl Jam albums are alot like movies you see at the theater - you leave the first time knowing that you really like it and it is your kinda movie - then time goes by and you rent the dvd - you think "wow" this IS a good movie and you find stuff about it you missed the first time - then time goes by and you buy the dvd - and you get to watch it in depth and try to digest all of it, the big top stuff, the small way under surface stuff - then you watch it with friends and tell them "hey check out this part," " and do you guys see how all the stuff in the beginning really more than ties in with the stuff at the end..."
Pearl Jam records are just like that - lots to digest and the more time goes by the more rich like wine each album becomes - that is why the guys in the band write such great music, you can always say that "wow they wrote this just for me" and even then 5 years later you listen again and you think "wow they wrote this just for me, still..."
Love Pearl Jam - they are the friggin best

I don't get it? I love this album...I think it is PJ at it's best. I look at it the same way I look at Yield...it has amazing diversity of music. This isn't Binaural, wich I found to be flat, but was incredible live. I just disagree on this one, but I guess we all agree, there isn't much they've done wrong in the last 20 yrs and they've kicked ass each of the 35 times I've seen them live. Looking forward to this years 5 show swing through NY, Boston and Hartford! :D
