MGMT stream new album 'Congratulations' online following leak

'We wanted to offer it as a free download', say band

MGMT have offered up their new album 'Congratulations' as a free stream after it leaked online.

The Brooklyn band said that they had wanted to give away the album, out officially on April 12, as a free download. Instead they have made the stream available at their official website, Whoismgmt.com.

"Hey everybody, the album leaked, and we wanted you to be able to hear it from us," they wrote on the site. "We wanted to offer it as a free download but that didn't make sense to anyone but us."

Click on the We7 widget below to hear the album (users outside the UK can hear 30-second clips of each song).

Sort of a disapointment. I understand they didn't want it to be poppy but I was atleast expecting some poppiness to it. There really isn't any of that.

  • After a few listens:

The hits: Someones Missing, Flash Delirium, Siberian Breaks, Congratulations
The misses: Dan Treacy, Brian Eno. (They both sound like early No Doubt throwaways, rather than the "surf psychadelia" that they think they achieved)

I listened to it a few times, I'm liking it with the exception of a few songs (Song For Dan Treachy & Lady Dada's Nightmare). Other than those I think it's a solid album, not as good as their first one, but a nice follow up.
