It's world water day ... we take water for granted and sometimes only an outbreak of e-coli or norwalk will make us rethink the way we do things ...

NAIROBI, Kenya - A new U.N. report says more people die from polluted water than from all forms of violence, including war. Monday's report says an estimated 2 billion tons of waste water - including fertilizer run-off, sewage and industrial waste - is being discharged daily. That waste fuels the spread of disease and damages ecosystems.

"Sick Water" - the report launched by the U.N. Environment Program to coincide with World Water Day - says 3.7 per cent of all deaths are attributed to water-related diseases, translating into millions of deaths. The report says that it takes 3 litres of water to produce one litre of bottled water, and that bottled water in the U.S. requires the consumption of some 17 million barrels of oil yearly.

Our most valuable resource, bar none......without it there is NO life...period, end of story.....but it's probably our most abused natural resource.....we dump everything from our body waste to coal ash sludge into the very sources of our drinking water....why? It appears that the answer is because we can.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.
  • The 'Governator' was bragging last year that Los Angeles now has twice as many people as it had in 1980. Yet we use exactly the same amount of water, meaning that each individual has halved his consumption. It is a crime to wash a sidewalk or driveway with water. Signs in Griffith Park warn that the sprinklers spray recycled sewage onto the grass.

On one hand, water is touted as a precious gift. On the other hand, the municipal supply is purposely poisoned with fluoride, chlorine, and other disinfectants. When tested, the water is proven to contain psychotropic drugs, toxic heavy metal sludge, and nuclear fallout.

I happen to work for a major water utility in CA, and while I do agree that there's a lot of crap in drinking water all over the country (unused drugs flushed down the toilet are a major concern where I am, for instance), the chlorine in the water is there for a reason - it's used to kill dangerous bacteria like E. coli that can invade our water supply. You REALLY want to bring back cholera epidemics and such stuff?

and i think a lot of the drugs like cocaine and anti depressants just can't be fully removed from the water, right?

They *can* be removed, the problem is that they'll be consumed by fish and other wildlife, accumulating in their systems, and when we or our livestock eat them, well, you can probably see where the problem is.

No, of course not. I didn't go into bacterial contaminants in my post. The faeces AND the disinfectants are all in the public water supply! I was reading a recent water quality report for the area which explained that the maximum legally-allowed limit of chlorine is not adequate to kill all of the shit. So other classes of disinfectants are added over and above the chlorine. Mmm.

Sounds like your filtration system is inadequate to deal with the contaminants in the drinking water. Chlorination doesn't kill everything - it won't kill parasites such as Cryptosproidium, for instance.

If we even got close to a level where our chlorination doesn't become effective enough (we have to monitor the raw water constantly for bacteria and turbidity) then we have to take drastic measures and notify the appropriate state and federal agencies. We take our work very seriously over here.

What? Do you mean that taking fluoride internally with every swallow of beverage is delicious and nutritious?

The fluoride that occurs naturally in some waters is calcium fluoride. That is the least harmful. The type in most toothpaste is sodium fluoride, a very different chemical: "Call your Poison Control Center immediately" is the warning on toothpaste. Sodium fluoride is a common pesticide and rat posion. It's not a nutrient! Water utilities often use sodium fluoride and/or fluorosalicylic acid, byproducts of aluminum smelting and fertiliser production. They are so deadly that they cannot legally be disposed of anywhere (So they can only be stored, I guess? Which could be why the companies cleverly sell the toxic waste to water utilities.)

WCVB in Boston did a story last week about one town's imported Chinese fluoride being contaminated with an unknown substance. The clip is on YouTube. There's a brief photo of an actual bag of this Chinese fluoride: In huge letters at the top, a warning states that the fluoride is deathly poison which targets the liver, bones, teeth, etc. The screen shot was of too low a resolution to post here. But I tried... I'm not just making up fairy stories to amuse you.

My neighbour DIED of bone cancer in December. Bioaccumulative flouride in bones is one major cause of bone cancer, especially in males. Obviously, I have no idea if his cancer was caused by fluoride. But his death is a great reason to try even harder to prevent cancer in myself.

the science behind flouride is very shady ... the thing that gets me is where most of it comes from when sold to municipal water outlets and retailers ... it's from the toxic waste created by the pesticide industry ... it can't be good for us ...

anyhoo - i think i read that flouride is more poisonous than lead on the poison scale ... and as cancer rates continue to rise ... it might be time to look at who's in charge ...

If it is our doing... that isn't really Malthus' argument, right? I don't think the problem is with there not being enough to go around, the problem is with human error ("negative externalities" for the economist) and unequitable distribution. Malthus was saying that we would literally not have enough to go around... which I don't think will ever be the case.

Fresh water rules, plain and simple. I have a campaign going on over at MyCharity:Water. If you guys remember before the holidays PJ posted 10 ways to give your time and money to good causes, this was one of them. If anyone can spare 20 bucks to contribute it'd be awesome. The campaign has 45 days left and I need $265 to reach my goal, any help would be much appreciated!

I disagree solely because if we're ruining the environment which prevents us from sustaining life (food, water, living), then it's actually a bit of both. And albeit we don't actually have a food or water shortage in the world currently, people die from not having these resources all the time.

I used to live in a town that had radiation exceeding EPA limits by an extraordinary amount. They produced food within a superfund site.

Now here where I live we are fighting reopening an ore mine which will pollute the complete water table for a 100 mile radius.

It never ends and it may never be reconciled.

People also cannot eat the fish out of the lakes without mercury poisoning.

Protection the world's water is an environmental issue, not just for ducks, birds, and fish; more important, it is a life sustaining issue for the human race, nature, and earth itself. The players/benefactors in all these crisis, [banking, economy, environment, oil, currency, food, health, wars] always seem to be linked. Fitting that Cerberus is their chosen entity; when grouped with their partners in Europe, you get the ultimate Hydra beast.
