So I was at Lucky Lounge in Austin on Friday at the set break of Ian Mclagan (http://www.macspages.com/) when my friend looks over at me and says, "let's try to go to La Zona Rosa and get into the John Hiatt, Ray Davies, Roky Erickson W/Okkervil River showcase."

You can not get in without a SXSW badge or wristband and we had neither, my friend is a beer rep for a local brewery here in town and he seemed pretty sure we could get in somehow. We walked up to the back bar, he talked to the door guy and we were in the back bar, step one complete. We sit down and order a couple of beers, my friend sees that they are out of one of his beers, he asks the bartender about it, she says talk to one of the managers. The manager comes over and the guy says they ran out, my friend says I am going to make a call and have 6 cases here tomorrow, the manager guy is happy. My friend then garbs his beer and I follow him around the corner of the back bar, we walk right into the venue where people with badges and wristbands are milling around.

YES, step two complete, we're in the show! Nicole Atkins comes out and plays a set, she was good, John Hiatt comes out and plays about and hour, he was real good, The 88 play next, they were good also, then finally Ray Davies comes out with just him and another guy and play Ray Davies solo material as well as Kinks songs that include, Where Have All The Good Times Gone, Apeman, Victoria, I'm Not Like Everybody Else, Two Sisters, Well Respected Man, Sunny Afternoon, Tired of Waiting.

That would have been good enough, but then The 88 came out and backed him on an electric set and they just plowed through Kinks songs like their life depended on it!

You Really Got Me, David Watts, Celluloid Heroes, Lola, Dead End Street, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, Low Budget.

I LOVE The Kinks, they are one of my all time favorite bands, I have seen Ray Davies twice before this night, but this show was just AWESOME, after they were done he came out and slapped peoples hands that were up against the rail, as I was, he slapped my hand twice and I left and walked back to my car and drove home.

On my way home I was thinking that for one week out of the year, my town, Austin, TX, TRULY is what they claim to be, "The Live Music Capital of The World" I love living in this place, I get to see TONS of GREAT music, so what if Pearl Jam has played in Texas once in 7 years, I still get to see "special" shows like the one on this night. This is the last year they are taping Austin City Limits shows in the small (315) venue, here's hoping a make it in to a few more of those this season!
