for a "soft opener" I would say Hard To Imagine (I know "soft" doesn't really apply) and I am kinda bias because they used that at Bonnaroo
another "soft opener" would be acoustic Oceans - just that song acoustic then back to full electric
for a "hard opener" I would love for Brain of J or Got Some
those first few lines to Got Some work so well and especially the way the whole band comes in at once right from the beginning

Green Disease would be cool.

I saw a show in Melbourne back in '03 where they opened up with Can't Keep (think it was the third show). 'Twas brilliant too. They should play it more.
Has Arc ever been used as an intro to the opener? I think it would go really well at the start of almost anything.
they (he) opened the iowa 03 show performing it. not on the boot though (none are). was there ever an answer as to whether it was left off all the boots for audio/soundboard reasons or due to the band's wishes? i've heard both

From wikipedia: The track entitled "Arc" was recorded as a vocal tribute to the nine people who died at the festival. Vedder only performed this song nine times on Pearl Jam's 2003 tour, and the band left the track off all released bootlegs as an act of respect.
how about Untitled/ Mfc , i think that would be a good opener, or something like Rearviewmirror or Wishlist, or just hit you strait in the face with Lukin- into- Not for you.

I can't remember offhand which boot RVM started with but I think it was from Binaural tour and it worked really well. Wishlist was my reason for this thread and I love the Untitled/MFC idea instead of just MFC on it's own

Find the St. Petersburg boot from 1994. RVM opens. Seems like it opened a show in 2000 or 2003 as well.
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do
thinkin 1/2 full would be a good opener with that first riff. dunno.
or ghost..
really in a riot act mood
Those are really good too. My dram opener would be Leash!

Taking a combination of what a couple of people said I think the instrumental idea would be really good. I'd love to see the band onstage with full house lights doing Master/Slave and have the lights fade down just in time for the intro to Once. Whoever said Yellow Ledbetter, yeah that would confuse the masses
I'd vote for W.M.A. - Matt could come out alone and start pounding away, then Jeff would join him, then Mike & Stone would come out, then lastly Ed would come out and sing. A badass way to start the show.
That being said, Master/Slave going into Once would make me nut myself.
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

Excellent choice and scenario to have Matt come out....don't get too emotional at concerts anymore but that would make me go f---ing nuts!!!!
How 'bout this? Picture the lights going down, place going berzerk Ed comes out says "good evening' and he blasts into lukin right into leash! (I dunno, thats just me). Something different I guess....
I was just listening to You Are and I think it would create a really good atmosphere as opener

They opened with Hard to Imagine at MSG1 in 2008 (bonnaroo too) and it worked well; Great opener.
Just to show everyone that PJ still have that punk edge they could open with Bleed For Me. I just remembered how much I love them doing that song.

The background information about Arc on the 2003 tour is another example of how lucky we are to be fans of such a cool group. They never embarrass us, only continue to impress.
