Music, weather and mood.

The sun is finally shining here in Blighty, and as a result my mood has lifted of late.

In parallel to the mood-shift, the music I'm listening to also tends to shift.

What are your 'summer' songs?

I can usually tell when Spring/Summer is here as I tend to play Today - Smashing Pumpkins quite a bit.

Summertime is hot hot hot in Atlanta so I'm floating in the pool- really love Dirty Vegas and Inxs, Robert Palmer upbeat dance type sing alongs and also music I grew up with like Supertramp and Alan Parsons but whatever the weather or mood its always right for Pearl Jam.

Weird you should mention INXS - I currently have the Best Of in the car at the moment. So that's them confirmed as Summertime hitmeisters...

I listen to a lot of Pearl Jam in the summer, more so than I do in the winter time...

  • My favorite girl and I went fishing saturday afternoon and we talked about this very thing. It's amazing how warm, sunny weather raises everyone's spirits. Spring is the most wonderful time of the year.
I too tend to gravitate toward the Black Crowes and PJ bootlegs during the spring, but it seems to also be a time when I pull out things I have not listened to in a while. Like I got out Drivin' n Cyrin' last night and blasted Straight to Hell....Fly Me Courageous!! GOOD STUFF!!!

    I LOVE SPRING!!!!

Songs that put me in a good carefree *summer* mood are:

Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen
    Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen
    Rosalita - Bruce Springsteen
    Hungry Heart - Bruce Springsteen
    Sherry Darling - Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen is probably the only artist that everyone in my family of origin likes or knows about. When I hear his older music I think of the good times with my family.

Spread out now Rosie doctor come cut loose her mama's reins
You know playin' blind man's bluff is a little baby's game
You pick up Little Dynamite, I'm gonna pick up Little Gun
And together we're gonna go out tonight and make that highway run
You don't have to call me lieutenant Rosie and I don't wanna be your son
The only lover I'm ever gonna need's your soft sweet little girl's tongue
    Ah Rosie you're the one

Dynamite's in the belfry baby playin' with the bats
Little Gun's downtown in front of Woolworth's tryin' out his attitude on all the cats
Papa's on the corner waitin' for the bus
Mama she's home in the window waitin' up for us
She'll be there in that chair when they wrestle her upstairs 'cause you know we ain't gonna come
I ain't here on business baby, I'm only here for fun
    And Rosie you're the one

    Rosalita jump a little lighter
Senorita come sit by my fire
I just want to be your lover ain't no liar
    Rosalita you're my stone desire

Jack the Rabbit and Weak Knees Willie you know they're gonna be there
Ah sloppy Sue and Big Bones Billie they'll be comin' up for air
We're gonna play some pool, skip some school, act real cool
Stay out all night it's gonna feel alright
So Rosie come out tonight, Oh baby come out tonight
Windows are for cheaters, chimneys for the poor
Oh closets are for hangers, winners use the door
So use it Rosie, that's what its there for

    Rosalita jump a little lighter
Senorita come sit by my fire
I just want to be your lover ain't no liar
    Rosalita you're my stone desire
    Alright

Now I know your mama she don't like me 'cause I play in a rock and roll band
And I know your daddy he don't dig me but he never did understand
Your papa lowered the boom he locked you in your room
I'm comin' to lend a hand
I'm comin' to liberate you, confiscate you, I want to be your man
Someday we'll look back on this and it will all seem funny
But now you're sad, your mama's mad
And your papa says he knows that I don't have any money
Oh your papa says he knows that I don't have any money
Oh so your daddy says he knows that I don't have any money
(Oh your papa says he knows that I don't have any money)

Tell him this is last chance to get his daughter in a fine romance
Because a record company Rosie just gave me a big advance
And my tires were slashed and I almost crashed but the Lord had mercy
And my machine she's a dud out stuck in the mud somewhere in the swamps of Jersey
Well hold on tight, stay up all night 'cause Rosie I'm comin' on strong
By the time we meet the morning light I will hold you in my arms
I know a pretty little place in Southern California down San Diego way
There's a little cafe where they play guitars all night and day
You can hear them in the back room strummin'
So hold tight baby 'cause don't you know daddy's comin'
    Ahhhh...

    Rosalita jump a little lighter
Senorita come sit by my fire
I just want to be your lover ain't no liar
    Rosalita you're my stone desire

    Ohh yeah yeah yeah...

  • iron and wine is gonna be awesome to chill out to in a few months. such gorgeous and beautiful songs and they are they type of songs that you just put the headphones on, and lay in the grass looking up at the blue sky, in mid july.
  • I tend to listen to more upbeat, "happy"-sounding music in the summer and more reflective, quiet music in the winter. My listening habits don't really change all that much, but lighter stuff generally accompanies nice weather and darker stuff gloomy weather.

It is rainy and I'm hoping the sun stays hidden today. I don't think I can greet it properly anyways.
Somehow to me it still feels like springtime here in Atlanta, maybe I haven't committed.
I'll listen to what PJ radio gives me, thank you, while I work.
Then the music I put on later will be reflective, as I need to regroup my mind, whatever that means. It is lost somewhere in between worry and disappointment. I'll find the hope and the peace though, it's there in the music.

It's glorious here in Coventry today... I have been mostly listening to Mumford and Sons, Drive By Truckers and Yield :D
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
