pretty cool. may have to finally see the guy in concert. he played back in 1999 at some small club here in Eugene, just before he blew up. i didnt get to see the show, but I would bet the crowd would have numbered 100 people or so. pretty unreal to think now he can sell out stadiums.
i would love to hit up that Ridgefield show, only 20 min from portland. I know Pj played there last year around the same time, still what an odd day for an outdoor show, for a musician known for making summer sounding music, show is Oct 3. In Portland, it may well be rainy by then. Odd date thats for sure.

cool, thanks
Just saw him two nights at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, a.maze.ing !!! Do whatever you can to catch these final shows, am seriously considering getting down to Santa Barbara for the conclusion.
Opening act, indonesian singer Zee Avi is a little pixie of delight! She's funny and entertaining and her songs are beautiful and sweet. She joined Jack for a duet/dueling ukes during his set as well. Great tropical folksy vibe to get the concert started! Think she covered a Ya ya ya's song? And her songs are really nice too!
Then Tuesday night we had G-LOVE, I had no clue, groaned when he first started playing, and about 40 seconds in I just had to let my "freak flag fly" (i have no idea what that means....) What a performer, working the crowd and yet dropping down to terms like "mothersucker" to keep it family friendly, hilarious! That really ramped up the crowd, awesome fun on Booty Call that segued into "Why Don't We Do It In the Road" that was funkalicous! Jack's bassist came out and rapped with him, then G-Love came out for Jack too, laid down some mean harmonica on the encores, some more rappin'. Total fun!
Wednesday night, Zach Gill's (Jack's pianist) band ALO filled the 2nd spot. Again, fun funky music, very jam heavy and heady. Zach is most impressive! While he was burning up our dreams on the barbeque, he gave us a little back with "Eye of the Tiger" that had folks in stitches. Had never seen ALO either, so that was a real treat, some great jams -- though at one point, was thinking, "Man, my kid plays too much Mario for me to appreciate that synth sound." He had a real arcade-game sound going for a bit that was just dental drill to me. But otherwise, romping stomping fun! And what a growl and gravelly voice, perfect counterpart to Jack!
Now understandably, Zach's music lent for a better segue into Jack. The energy level was so high after G-Love that it was a noticable downshift when Johnson came out, even though he opened with an electric/full band tune on Tuesday. Wednesday after Zach, Jack just strolled out on stage with his acoustic and did two Brushfire Fairytale numbers before the band joined him. And then wednesday just ramped up from there into an amazing night of music. The setlists were just different enough to make both nights pay off big.
Paula Fuega, a hawaiin singer, joined him for another duet (after Zee's tune) and on wednesday they covered a hilarious ALO tune, "Girl I'm gonna lay you down" that was just the best laid back surfer Barry White seduction I'd ever heard. So many shifts over Jack's set, lots of little cover's thrown in here and there, a bit of "Red Red Wine" some Car's "Just WHat I Needed" a little Miller "Space Cowboy" (man has Jack coopted THAT song, totally made it his, perfect pipes for it, perfect vibe, "really love your peaches, wanna shake your tree!")
The set on Wednesday just seemed to build and build and build, until finally he just flat out ran outta time, had to rush through the encores and split, sadly. Too many extended jams (awesome), total fun with the audience, (You'd think we have a fog machine up here, nope! That's just ONE guy here in the front row!) Just a great performer, he put together just an amazing set on Wednesday. Tuesday seemed to have a bit of a lull in the middle (not hard with his style of music) before cranking it back up, but then again, i was with my daughter on Tuesday, while I had the lil woman with me on Weds so perhaps that made the slower vibe work for me and the squeeze!
His efforts on highlighting local nonprofits and charities, setting up a green village of info booths and doing a few acoustic tunes on a back stage a half hour before the concert began is a noteworthy touch!
And just one last highlight, perhaps a first at any rock concert -- on Tuesday, Zach gets up for an accordian solo and Jack dares him, go ahead, you can do it, just crowd surf that bad boy accordian player! The sight of a grown man with an accordian strapped to his belly being passed around the crowd was freakin hilarious! As Zach put it, "Wow, that's an accordian player's dream come true!"
Was certainly mine, Jack Johnson totally delivered, have been dying to see him for so long, just missed his tours in 2003 and 2005, then he's been playing big festivals around here that I've skipped.
Having him play what is just about the best outdoor venue in the Bay Area (i'd add the Frost up there) for two nights was just cosmic! Nope, you don't need to bring a fog machine when you play the Greek in Berkeley!
Now if only we could get PJ into this 8500 seat marvel!
I've been a big fan for years and years now but this was the first time I've seen Jack live and I was very impressed. He put on a hell of a show, and the whole experience was just..."fun"!
Perfect weather. 70 degrees, not a cloud in the sky, some drinks, and a hell of a show.
Oh and I also really enjoyed Zee Avi. Amazing voice, and just a chill vibe to her music.
If you haven't made it, there are still a couple of shows left. Highly recommended!
