You'll get a lot of opinions about this, but I was born and raised eating KC BBQ. Most of them are pretty damn good, to be honest. However, THE joint is Arthur Bryant's. When the presidents visit KC, this is where they eat. The place has been around for 80+ years and you can't replicate the flavor of their smoker. Think about it -- 80 years of flavor cooked in. Whenever I visit friends and family back in KC, this is the one place I absolutely eat no matter what. Oh, and you have to go to the original location on Brooklyn. The newer ones don't even come close. Go during the day (sketchy neighborhood at night, but it's packed with businesspeople during the day) and go super hungry. You won't even believe the amount of food they give you. Pearl Jam and Bryant's -- man, you are in for a treat!

I went to KC for a weekend Royals series, and we went to Oklahoma Joes. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm it was so good. highly recommend it. Anthony Bourdain rated it as one of the 10 places to eat before you die. Line was out the door, waited about an hour. So worth it. Its connected to a gas station

Don't even mess around. Go to Bryant's and you'll be glad you did. That was my pre-show ritual in 98, 2000 and 2003 and I don't plan on breaking it this year.

PS -- are you really coming into KC from southern CT? My gf is originally from there and I can tell you that's one helluva trip!

I went to Jack Stack's when I was in KC a few years ago and thought it was great but I will definitely check out Arthur Bryant this time around.

As a life long KC BBQ addict, its Oklahoma Joes if you are going to eat just one.

I lived in KC for many years and I'd say Oklahoma Joe's is the place you must go to if only can hit up one place. If can do two, do Bryant's, both are SO good! I'm going to Oklahoma Joe's tonight before the show!

I've only lived in KC for a year and half, but here's my 2¢.

OK Joes has great sandwich combos and an interesting location (inside a gas station). The line/wait can get pretty long if you go during lunch or dinner times.

Arthur Bryant's is classic. This is my favorite. Go to their original location. Excellent ribs and other meats. Grungy atmosphere, but this is the real deal. They do BBQ. Vinegar based BBQ sauce. I have a funny story about the first time I went there, late at night. :)

Jack Stack's is upscale BBQ. They have great meats and dishes. Sit down, nice restaurant atmosphere. Good place to go if money isn't a concern and you'd like to have a relaxing sit down meal. They've got a few locations around. The one on the Plaza is just a few miles south of the Sprint Center on main.

Gates is a franchise chain and they'll yell at you to take your order. :) That throws some people off. It did me. I found most of their meats lacking compared to all of the other places, but there are plenty of people who like them, and there are several locations around the city.

There's a few other places I've yet to check out like LC's, but that covers most of the well known stuff.

    KC BBQ is legit.

I live in NJ and get Gates BBQ sauce mailed out to me from my inlaws. I have about 6 jars right now, so I am good to go. When I come close to running out I get more sent. I have shared it with friends and they love it.

We went to Jack Stacks at lunch, ate at the bar, what a beautiful place. We had a bottle of red and then a freebie glass from the bartender, so friendly. The food was great, we had a couple appetizers, our MO. A smoked salmon plate and the burnt ends 2 meat variety plate. Very tasty stuff indeed. It seems wherever you are in KC, driving, walking the streets, sitting on your hotel balcony there is the sweet smell of BBQ in the air :D I bet the locals don't even notice it anymore.
