Band of Horses opening for Pearl Jam

Is anyone else really excited to see Band of Horses opening the May dates for Pearl Jam? These guys are really really cool and will undoubtedly gain some new fans this spring. Their first two albums, Everything All the Time and Cease to Begin, blend Sub Pop Seattle indie rock seamlessly with southern reverb in the My Morning Jacket style of melting faces. Their third effort, Infinite Arms, will coincidentally be released on May 18th. They have added two additional musicians, so it will be interesting to see how they gel together on a big stage. Several bands have thrived under this spotlight and grown into extremely successful touring acts in their own right. No reason to think that would be any different for BoH. If you're seeing Pearl Jam this May, come early. I promise you won't regret it.

A buddy of mine turned me on to em a little over a year ago. They're awesome. I find myself listening to "Is There A Ghost" off the second album a lot.

Wish I could afford to go to one of the US gigs - Band of Horses and Pearl Jam is a dream gig. Saw BOH a couple of years ago in Dublin and have been in to them ever since. Slight preference for the first album over the second but they're both quality, lookin forward to the third one coming out in May. Definitely a PJ gig to turn up early for!

Not much of a fan, but I'm still a little excited to see them as an opener. I kinda dig their sound, just don't feel like they take it anywhere.

It's coming out on May 18th, the night of the second Boston show. Two days before MSG I. I'm like you jervin, I want to know the new material ahead of time. I think I'm gonna buy the album, get versed on it, then head to Boston night two to hear the new stuff live. That's the plan at least so far I think.

I also want to say too that BoH will be playing JazzFest in May with Pearl Jam. There's a strong chance Ed jams with BoH and they work on a little number to close out the opening act. Ed and Jim hit it off in 2006 and the result was two gems of A Quick One, While He's Away(The Who) and It Makes No Difference(The Band).

These guys sound like a complete rip off of MMJ... Am I the only one who thinks this?
  • i can't wait, even though i was slightly disappointed by in their acoustic set at carnegie hall last year. pj really has a knack for touring with my other favorite bands (sleater-kinney, my morning jacket, and now boh!)

Listening to the wrong MMJ songs. Im not a big fan of their slow stuff, but they are amazing live when they rock. Pearl Jam level of good, BoH? Really? Hmmm...

Band of Horses 3.18.2010 JamBase Review of SXSW show...

"Another group with a new album coming soon (Infinite Arms out May 17 on Columbia), Band of Horses also toil in emotion's murky waters. Ben Bridwell and his Horses aren't afraid to get their hands dirty digging through dark soil, but like Broken Social Scene, there's resolution and joy in the end. Starting their set at Stubb's with "Is There A Ghost" and "Great Salt Lake," it didn't take long for the giant guitars and powerful vocals to capture the sprawling crowd's attention. And when the girl next to me grabbed her boyfriend's arm and said, "I'm sooo excited. I love this band," it was clear this music speaks to people. Like art in general, it's a difficult thing to quantify or explain. Why does a certain selection of notes or set of words make us feel what it does? What is it about certain songs that allow them to touch us so deeply? Hard to say, but when you feel it, there's no mistaking it. Band of Horses staples "The Funeral," "No One's Gonna Love You" and "Marry Song" were coupled with a Yo La Tengo cover and two new songs. The first new track was a mid-tempo burner pulled tight with emotion and the second was a foot-stomping country rock number with a heavy dose of organ; both show great promise for the upcoming album. More than even the sweet material Bridwell is coming up with, what makes Band of Horses so great right now is that they are a real band and they're finding their power. The lineup went through a number of changes before arriving at this unit and every time I've seen this band over the past year or two they've gotten better and better."
