Has he lost his mind???? Does he talk to people from Venezuela?? Ozzie Guillen (manager for the Chi-Sox) is really giving it to Penn on Twitter. His English isn't the best but he is funny.

But he's been that way for a long time. I just don't get it. Does he want America to be like Venezuela? He wouldn't want to talk to Ozzie Guillen, then he might here the truth.

What's the truth? Care to enlighten us? Or does the truth about American politics reside with the manager of a baseball team?
  • man what is all the fuss about... so the guy said a few things some of you don't agree with, but the reaction is ridiculous... he's ain't the only smart guy in the US who questions the god for sakeen status quo and believes in a system which ain't freakin capitalism... let the man be...

I've said it elsewhere and I'll say it again, the man's a rocker...

    Penn is a freakin idiot.

If Penn had it his way, he would want America to be like Cuba.
  • and maybe America would have more character then...

I don't really know anything about the situation but I doubt that Penn wants the USA to be like Cuba

I'd like to give Penn more credit than this as well ... Cuba is a complicated place and I am guessing that if one straight up asked Penn if he thought that the US should be a socialist dictatorship, he'd say no, although he might also highlight the areas where Cuba doesn't do too badly (e.g., health care). He seems like the kind of guy whose emotions often supercede his ability to appreciate the implications of what he's saying. I can kind of relate ... You make rational argument after rational argument, and eventually you get so fed up (no one listens) that you wind up telling someone to fuck off. Sean Penn is inclined to keep talking long after that point, for better or for worse.

    @acrossOceans:
America is lacking in some respects, but character isn't one of them. When I am in the rural US, I wind up thinking that there's a bit too much character at times. :P

Cool ... Out of curiosity, what do I usually say that's so objectionable?

in the the US, like any other country, there are many smart, intellectual and conscienable groups, institutions, and individuals. Atists, musicians, activists and professionals of all sorts, who of course "characterize" the nation , if you will, to an extent.

But what I mean is, is that the current system of government in the US as well as in many other countries, is capitalist to the extreme, which results in the masses buying into that system so that everyone's out to get more n more for themselves. I know communism and socialism are dirty words in some western countries, but in countries which have seen those systems for e.g, the masses are not bent on self gain. The instituions are founded on principles more decent and humane than capitalism and consumerism, and if not, then the population tends to constantly question the status quo, and for me that's a nation havin some character.

The reason 3rd world countries are so fucked up, is because you've got all kinds of systems runnin there. In Pakistan, you see ruthless capitalism in some cities and areas , rural orders elsewhere, and then the religious and socialist orders so that it's all a mess. But at least the common man thinks for himself and doesn't buy into whatever conventional politics has to say, and that's due to struggle.

It's said that people under military dictatorships and socialist or religious orders buy into all the propoganda of the state, but I gotta say, I've seen exactly that and worse,in western countries where I;ve been. Socialism is actually a dirty word in the US/ UK etc and that's just funny. It;s these mindless stigmas n all which are absurd, and that's what prevent groups and individuals from questionin the status quo, cuz then they are either unpatriotic, or commies, or anti semitic and what not. It's crazy

Of course there's some fairly mindless political censure in Western countries ... And I think that the common man can think for himself no matter where he lives. Maybe the West takes some extra flack because our ideal is that everyone is free and open-minded and reasonable and (of course) we often fail to live up to that ideal, whereas few other places even pretend that this is the case. I don't know. If you did some sort of culturally valid "open-mindedness and free thinking" survey and compared the results across nations, I suspect you'd find uniformly low scores across the board, with fairly few differences.
  • i see where you're comin from... I guess as far as character goes, it depends on your personal style and what appeals to you when you walk down a street in any city/country... do you like thingds a bit haphazard and casual or do you like everythin to be in perfect order. For me, the former.

Clearly that was a subjective statement from me. My bad: )

Haphazard and casual can be nice ... :) I am not big on bullets flying around, but that can happen in parts of the US too.

Did you watch the interview? It was a throwaway comment. It didn't mean a thing. He just threw out some words that expressed his disgust with a bunch of people who see it as their job to criticize and trivialize him and his efforts. He said he doesn't give these people much thought, mainly because he has better things to think about. He then says "Would I care if these people died of rectal cancer? No." That's it. The moment Sean Penn became a demon whipping boy in the eyes of every Hugo Chavez hater across the U.S.

It's all actually pretty pathetic and juvenile. But I suppose it does give the right something else to froth about apart from Universal Health Care.

Did anyone here actually watch? He explains his opinion on Chavez pretty clearly. Check it out if anyone is interested. The guy doesn't hate America, he just thinks we can do better. I agree.

But what it comes down to is that Chavez is a crook. Look how poor those countries are. Also, look at all the baseball players coming out and talking how bad it is there. In this case it is what it is. Meaning that Chavez is what it he seems like he is. Which is an asshole. I normally do not agree with the media but when it is coming from former residents I will side with them. Penn can say what he thinks but until you really live in a country and see the deep roots of it he should just have no comment. I normally think Penn fights the good fight in this case he is not well informed.

Side note: I am talking only about his Venezuela comments only.
