philly, nyc, boston ... chicago ...

1. They are the most populous and also are closest to more fans
2. The big cities act like hubs similar to airlines (they are generally easier to descend upon for outsiders) as flights/trains all go there.
3. It helps with the smaller town shows in that - locals are more likely to get tickets because if they didn't play these towns - all those aforementioned fans will now be scooping up tickets to the smaller town shows. I'm pretty sure that if they played 4 smaller towns instead of NYC and Boston ... all those shows would be really hard to get tix for because those fans would travel to whatever towns are closest.
4. The band has been touring for almost 20 years ... they aren't young anymore and have families ... doing 45 shows in 55 nights is just not fun for them ... the fact they tour every year now at least gives each fan the potential of seeing them at least once a year ... having said that - they have to go to where the majority of their fans are ... there is a reason why boston and nyc will be the hardest tickets to get - its where the majority of fans are.
