Is it usually 3-4 weeks for state and 4-6 weeks for federal?

The state took their money out of my account that i owed them in 3 days. I got my federal return direct deposited into my account in 7 days.

I filed the third week in January and did it online with direct deposit.

Just sent for the state refund today.

I owe the Feds $4K, so I'm not in any hurry to pay.

Make sure you are not incurring any possible underpayment penalties because you are holding the return til April.

It varies by how high your income is, but in some cases, you need to have paid-in the lesser of 90% of your 2009 tax, or 100% of your 2008 tax, by January 15, 2010 to avoid underpayment penalty/interest.

That is why people who are self-employed, or have high investment earnings, make quaterly estimated payments.
