I'd say Dave A, though it's not objective at all, because that was many years ago, I was a teenager, and this was best time of my life.

Now, I couldn't give you a proper answer : Matt is awesome too (And I loved him in Soundgarden).

as a drummer who's played their stuff since the early 90', i prefer dave a on just about all of the early stuff. his "wet" use of cymbals, tight to loose hi hat use, and great timing on songs like blood where his cymbals are timed specifically to the guitar changes.

i love matt on the new stuff, but the early stuff he plays is just plain vanilla and "dry" in comparison to the way dave played it, with tom-tills crammed in. luckily he's been adding some crash cymbals over the last 2 years, but their use is still not where i like it

I just miss the musicality ever since dave stopped.

I've typed up a detailed apples-by-apples comparison, to highlight the differences, if youre interested.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

Matt is/was fucking ace in Soundgarden but isn't as free etc as he is in PJ imo. He does the nice odd bit like Sleight Of Hand etc but Dave A's style was just insane, the grooves, the fills just everything about it was so original and brilliant. However to hear the matured band like that now would be a very interesting thing but who knows maybe Matt suits the more grown up PJ.

Dave A. Just the energy he brought to the band is unmatched.

Oh, on another note. Don't look at the Hoff's avatar for more than 30 seconds. I thought I was seeing things out of the corner of my eye and then stared for many seconds. Well played, sir.

    Yeah it's only the 15,000 thread on this :?: :?: ..

i would think Matt since he has been with the band the longest no uhggggg :? .
jesus greets me looks just like me ....
  • I think they were all perfect on the records they recorded with the band.

Dave Abbruzzese rocked the shit out of every song he played live that I've ever heard, so he was perfect for that era.

Jack Irons wasn't so much on the old tracks, but I felt he really shined on No Code and Yield.

Matt Cameron came in when the band was becomming less agressive there in 1998 and thats also when I came on board 14 years old as a fan. He's perfect for the band then and now.

Glad you mentioned, so I'm not the only one seeing things. I also waited for it to appear again. Confusing

  • It got me, too. I thought I had unknowingly unleashed some evil spirit and it was trying to tell me that I'mma die.

To the person who said Dave Grohl...it would be interesting, after hearing Them Crooked Vultures amongst other projects with him on skins, to hear what he would have contributed to the sound of Pearl Jam.

I do not agree with the musicality thing. Matt is a creative drummer and has contributed some great shit to this band and to music in general. He is my favorite. I like his style.

Dave Abbruzzese is my favorite Pearl Jam drummer, I would have given anything to see him live behind the drums with Pearl Jam. He made the climb with Eddie, Stone, Jeff and Mike from playing clubs in front of 60 people to playing in front of 60,000. Whether Jeff and Ed will ever admit it, Dave had a huge impact on Pearl Jam's sound during the peak of their popularity. Pearl Jam was a combination of Ed's unbelievable voice and stage presence combined with Stone's guitar groves, Jeff's energy bouncing all over the stage , Mike's Stevie Ray Vaughn influenced guitar solos and Dave's aggressive drumming.

I've seen Dave, Jack & Matt live, Matt was better suited for Soundgarden....don't get me wrong, he is a FINE drummer, but Dave A flowed more....I saw Dave play twice with PJ in 1992, and they were certainly a force to be reconned with...Matt is precise and mechanical, that's all...just a matter of personal taste....for that matter, Jack rocked the living fuck out of YIELD....anyways..... :? :? :? ramble, ramble, ramble...

i gotta say jack was my favorite. technically he was probably their worst drummer, but his style really gave so much space to everyone else. they crafted their best work with him.
