I know what you're thinking- this is a thread about former White Sox hurler 'Black' Jack McDowell (who loves Pearl Jam and has a favorite song of Present Tense).

YOU'RE WRONG

I'm talking about the game of 21. Does anyone here like to dabble in the sometimes sweet, mostly sick game of BlackJack?

Oh man, Dave, you're talking my language. Got hooked on it during a trip to Aruba when I was 19. Once I turned 21, I was at Foxwoods every weekend for 5, 6, 7, 8 hour runs. I had, at one point in 2003-2004 a streak of 13 straight times winning $300 or more. There's nothing better than being on a nice heater in the wee hours, splitting aces and ripping the dealer apart. Such a cruel and twisted game too, as you mentioned. So much depends on 3rd base and always being aware of the landscape of the game/shoe. I could go on for hours about this stuff.

Trust me, I've come to this conclusion already. Sounds like a much more fun, and less expensive experience.

i laughed when you mentioned 'heater'- it reminded me of The Hangover.

But ya, I've done well but it mainly causes a HUGE dent in my wallet. I just watched a basic tutorial on card counting on youtube. I've done well the last couple of times I've gone to the Horseshoe Casino (up 1750 or so)...but overall, I think I'e lost around 25K since turning 21 five years ago.

Haha, well I know I haven't lost anywhere near 25k since turning 21, but it's probably in the ballpark. I know Ive lost at least 5 in my two trips to Vegas.

I have always adhered to three basic rules when playing blackjack. Establishing a healthy balance between the three has gone a long way for me doing well.

    1. You (and everyone else at the table) MUST play textbook hands. If everyone does as they are supposed to, and the guy on 3rd base stands with 13, shit usually hits the fan.
    2. No Fear - Any indecision you have about a potential move will enevitably go in the dealer's favor. I don't know how this works, but the BlackJack gods always see to it that it does.
    3. It's very difficult to keep an efficient and precise count on the cards, especially when you're with friends drinking, checking out the scenery (if you know what I mean) and generally having a good time. I try to keep up with Aces and face cards, and from that little bit of info, direct my bets accordingly. This isn't always effective, but seems to work for me by and large.

Was down in Atlantic City two weekends ago and had dealer after dealer whip my ass all evening. Five times in a row I had one dealer turn over a 10 already showing a 10. Twice I had the same dealer turn over 5 cards to hit 21. It was such a bad evening for all of us, we were back in our room drinking beer in time for SNL.

Love me some blackjack. I pretty much only play in Vegas. There are a few casinos outside Chicago that I could go to, but I just don't have the urge.

But when I'm in Vegas, I can get pretty compulsive. It's so hard to walk away from the table....especially when you are up. But out of my 5 trips to Vegas, I've come back on top 4 times. All you need is to get hot (a heater) for a short period of time and that can make your trip. The weird part is that usually I am drunk off my ass when this happens. Last time at the NYNY, I sat down at about 5 am with $150 and walked away with $2,000....I think that might have been one of the best half hours of my life!

that's happened to me too many times. you're lucky if you push on a blackjack.
BUT, I've noticied on those 21+3 (poker hand bonus tables) that when shoes tend to go bad, the plus 3 hits and you're still in the game.

My dad used to play Blackjack for a living. He now plays Holdem Poker for a living. The only thing I remember that he tought me was:

Always split aces and eights. Even when you count cards it only bumps your odds up to 51%.

In the movie Rainman they say "Nobody in the world can count six decks of cards". I've seen my dad count an eight deck shoe and not lose a beat in his conversation with someone off the table. He just glances back and calculates everything in a heartbeat. He now has some mathmatical equation and tracks the way cards move through the deck when the casino's use different shuffles. He has also had some of his work taught at the University of Nevada curriculum.

He used to write for a ton of magazines under the name Justin Baxter (pen name) and was part of a team that tried to break Vegas. Obviously impossible, but I do remember his saying they made more then 100k each over the summer.

Now he rarely goes to Vegas except for the World Series cause he can make so much playing online. He once asked me how much I made at which point he laughed and said "I make more then that and I'm in my jammies on the computer"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xd5fh41O ... re=related

He no longer works on his site but this gives you an idea of the type of thought process into a simple hand of poker.
