Man I hope someone gets that reference...anyhoodle... :D

Anybody here into soul/classic R&B/Motown etc?

I just got the Stax box set for Christmas and have been plowing through it for weeks now.

Today however, I can't stop listening to the Temptations. Not so much the big HITS, more like their mid-period stuff: I Can't Get Next To You, I Know I'm Losing You, Cloud Nine, Psychadelic Shack, etc.
It is a constant battle between the Temptations and the Four Tops for me, I love them both so much.

I realize this is probably not the genre of choice for most people round these parts, but I figured I'd see....

Oh and Sam Cooke Live at the Copa is probably the best live non PJ album I own.

Great thread. Ive been into soul big time the last two years or so. Sam Cooke is the king. Early Ray Charles, Otis my man, Queen Aretha, James Brown, Al Green, Lou Rawls.

Some others on the periphery include Dusty Springfield (who took all the songs Aretha didn't want to sing) and Cat Power. She transcends genres and adds the blues/soul touch to her work. Nothing says soul like a 30-something white girl from generation X

Don't even talk to me about Cat Power. Do you want a punch to the throat? I think you might?

Aside from that, though, you are great, so yes let's talk soul!

Do you have the Otis Redding Monterey Pop performance? I was lucky enough to find this one on vinyl for $1 a few weeks back. Any live Otis is amazing?

If you don't have that live Sam Cooke album though, get on it sir! Or I will totally send it to you...

James Carr is another great one...sort of obscure though.

Hold on, what's your problem with Chan? She's my girl, so I kinda have to defend her honor.

Love some R&B/Soul/70's funk. Agree on Sam Cooke, although I haven't heard live at the Copa. The live stuff I have heard is great.

I've picked up a lot of good (out of print) stuff off this blog:

"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.
