So, the question is, am I industrious enough to compile results and name the most popular non-PJ album of the 00's amongst Pearl Jam fans? Maybe...

i know everyone is entitled to their own opinion but im sorry i just don't know how anyone could put riot act on a list of best albums of the past decade...some of you need to expand your horizons i think.

disclaimer: i love pearl jam as much as anyone else here and i know this sounds elitist and arrogant but i cant help but be amazed by how many times i saw riot act mentioned.

i would think that rather than calling out people for putting riot act on their list, you'd have more of a problem with taylor swift and dashboard confessional being mentioned. anyway, maybe riot act just never clicked with you? for that i am sorry. i actually put riot act on my list. i think riot act is one of the most interesting albums in the pj catalog, and the '03 tour was probably my favorite era for the band. going back to listen to the album, it probably isn't one of my favorites musically of the past ten years, but it brings back a lot of memories, and has some of pearl jam's best work of the decade. for those reasons, it's a personal favorite.

...on the other hand, i was thinking the exact same thing about all the mentions of "evil urges", so i sympathize with where you are coming from. mmj is one of my favorite bands, and i can't imagine how anyone in their right mind would put, in my opinion, the only blemish in their catalog, on a top 15 of the decade list considering the rest of their output. how this makes sense is beyond me....

oh... hey guys,... im standing right here. Don't mind me. I read something recently about how some people spend more time talking shit about music they don't like, then talking good about music they do like. So how about instead of having a problem with me for liking Taylor Swift, or Dashboard Confessional, or a problem with any of us for liking Riot Act, you tone down the negativty, and talk a little more about what music moves you personally, rather than worry about music you don't like and you don't approve of me for liking, whether or not you've even given it a fair chance.

And it also seems a little silly and condescending to one second write how people need to "expand your horizons" and then in the next post mention "taylor swift and all the emo shit". Shouldnt someone with an "expanded horizon" at least recognize that just because they dont like or know or relate to a certain music genre or band, doesn't neccesarily automatically make it "shit"?

cool. where did you read that? and don't worry, we didn't "mind you". personally i don't really care what music you like, i don't even know you....but if i wanted to have a serious conversation with someone about the best music of the last ten years and you are talking about taylor swift, dashboard, blink 182, maroon 5 etc. then you'll have to excuse me for disregarding your opinion.....and trust me, i don't need to give anything you've mentioned a "fair chance". i've heard taylor swift a million times with a diferent name and face. same goes for dashboard confessional. blink 182? everyone has listened to blink 182, i actually liked dude ranch and a couple of their earlier albums when i was in high school. the point is, everyone has heard your favorites, and it just so happens that the general consensus says they suck. i'm just telling you how it is. maybe you should stop caring what other people think....especially if you listen to stuff like maroon 5, cause believe me, this won't be the last time someone makes fun of your music.

there's your response you were looking for.

...now, for reality. this was never about you.

First off, if you look at the title of this thread, we are not discussing "the best music of the last ten years" we are sharing our personal "Favorite albums" of the last ten years. I can assure you, I would not put many of those albums in a list for "best albums". But, they are music and bands I like, and I am not afraid to say that. I just think it is sad when people think that somehow God, or whatever, blessed them with the only true ability to rate what music is good music, and therefore, if they think music sucks, it must suck. It is also funny you claim that the "general consensus" is that these bands suck. Does that general consensus include album sales, radio play and awards? Because if we are going to use the term "general consensus" I am pretty sure Tayolr Swift would rank way above Pearl Jam. Don't get me wrong, I am not coming close to saying she is better than Pearl Jam, or that I care about Grammy awards or something like that, but if you are going to use the term "general consnsus" you should probably define what is "general". I have never once cared about wheter the music I am listening to is cool, and that goes for Pearl Jam. Go to a Taylor Swift message board, or a Dashboard message board, and say you love Pearl Jam, and see the sort of responses you get.

And that's the only thing that bothers me about this. This idea that you, or anyone, including me, has the final say on what is good music, and what music sucks. The point is, I don't care if people make fun of me for listening to one band or another, I am very happy with the music I listen to, I just think its disapointing that instead of sharing the albums that someone likes, they worry more about the music I like, and feel a need to make fun of it, or talk down about it. And you didn't even start this, this all began with someone saying they can't believe someone likes Riot Act that much, once again impying, they don't like Riot Act, so how could anyone like it, because clearly, if they don't like something, there is just no way it could be any good, and therefore we should all dislike it, right?

I wasn't looking for a response. I would more just prefer people didn't go out of their way to put down other people or things they like, when they could spend more time talking about the things they do like, or, if they do feel it is necesary to claim their dislike of a band, maybe they could say something more along the lines of, "you know, I really don't care for Taylor Swift's music, but, a lot of 13 year old girls do (or in my case, 25-yr old guys), and that's there thing, and at the end of the day, if music can move someone, and make their life better, if only for a minute, than theres really nothing wrong with that, and more power to them." or something like that....

just for the record, my feelings arent hurt, I don't hold a grudge against anyone here, just I kind of got (somehat) indirectly put down here, and I felt a need to say my piexe. Not to defend my music, but to defend my right to listen to whatever I want, and know that just because someone doesn't like it, no matter how good of taste in music they have, it doesnt mean a thing to the music I like.

all fair points...i just get annoyed when people get upset about others bashing their music, when the whole point of these message boards is to discuss music. would it be nice if we all could just discuss what music we like and why it moves us? sure...but another part of these discussions is expressing what we don't like. like i said, this was never really about you personally, and not to say that you are one of them, but some people need to lighten up when people take jabs at what they like. if they really believe that there is nothing wrong with the music they listen to, they shouldn't be offended when someone bashes it.
