i enjoyed the "worst song" thread...but now i'm in the mood for some positive stuff

this is one of my top 10 pj songs...loved it for years before Matt joined the band

and i'd say one of the early songs that definitely improved with Matt drumming

he propels it in a way the other guys didn't
"I'll tell you what: If all I had was Pearl Jam, and I didn't have another band in the world, I would not be worried. Because in there is the essence of making great music. You don't have to use it all at once, but it's there." - Neil Young

I am a huge Matt fan, but I have to disagree with you on this one. I think the song really derives its OOMPH from the single kick that Dave used (no idea how to technically describe it, but Matt plays it with several kicks in each note). Matt's versions seem more mellow and smoothed out, where as Dave would really hit with a simplistic and savage beat. Come to think of it, this is probably my least favorite Cameronized version of any song. I would love to hear him play it in its original form once in a while.

Overall though I really enjoy his contributions to the band.

yea definitely. He plays that song much better than Dave. The extra bass hits kick ass and I love the break when they jam out before it gets all crazy at the end.

    this is correct.

the semmetry of the drums is what gave it its drive. single-bass, single-snare, single-bass, single-snare.

right now its much closer to Light Years than NFY. its lost its tension, which was the point of the song.

Matt turned an angry, rebellious song into a grooving, fun song.

    Correct.

For those that like "grooving, fun songs" that used to be "tense, rebellious and angry", its a positive.

    For those that don't, it's a negative.
