I've never seen anyone mention Rory on here before.
So today, on the occasion of what would have been his 62nd birthday, I felt I should honour this superb guitarist. He's Up there With Hendrix and Clapton and Page imo, and it's a crying shame he was taken away so young.

Here's a couple of tastes (no pun intended) of the master at work

    Rory is FANTASTIC!
  • I've read that Brian May credits Rory for his guitar playing sound with Queen .

There was a thread a while back.

My husband and I are BIG Rory fans from way back. My husband actually saw Taste open for Blind Faith and then saw him with his other band several times. I only got to see him once, in 79. Tremendous artist and it's criminal that he's so unknown.

There's a Rory festival every year in Cork and a friend of my husband's has gone every year for about 5 years now.

I know!!! At least here in Ireland he's well known. He has a little area in Temple Bar named after him. I thought Roryfest was in Donegal? Maybe I'm mistaken though. It would make a lot more sense to have it in Cork.

You're right, it's not in Cork. I was thinking there are so many Rory "landmarks" in Cork but I remembered when I saw your post.

I am a huge Rory fan. He was a great inspiration, a phenomenal guitar player and songwriter, and put on one helluva show. I was lucky enough to see him at The Tomorrow Club in Youngstown, Ohio in the early 70's and made my way to stage front. I actually got to touch the headstock of his famous Strat when he was running across the stage pointing it into the crowd like a machine gun! He got so worked up during the show that he was literally running circles around the stage, behind the amps and drum kit, back out to the front (something I've seen McCready do as well, by the way!) After the show, I asked a roadie for one of his picks and he picked one up off the floor for me. In typical modest Rory fashion, it was not personalized, just a pink Ernie Ball medium. I treasure it.
Also saw Rory at the Civic Arena (now Mellon Arena) in Pittsburgh, opening for Foghat! He never got the respect he deserved. Some of my favorite Rory tunes:
    I Fall Apart
    A Million Miles Away
    Tatoo'd Lady
    Souped Up Ford
    Jacknife Beat
    Admit It
I Wonder Who (Irish Tour '74 version)
    Messing with the Kid
    Bullfrog Blues

I could go on and on....
