Playstation 3 (ERROR 8001050F)

PLEASE READ: Don't turn on your PS3 (Error 8001050F advisory)
There's a system-wide bug that's afflicting older PS3 models (a.k.a. "fat" PS3s), officially called Error 8001050F.
Apparently, the internal settings/clock error causes older PS3s to stop functioning and delete user information such as in-game trophies.
The official word from Sony is that if you haven't turned on your older model PS3 since Sunday (28 February, 2010), keep it turned off until a firmware update is released (probably sometime within the next 24 hours).
My friend was trying to play his older PS3 online yesterday and all that would show on the screen was

it's more likley that it isn't fixed as much as it's a new day (at least as far as GMT goes).
Nobody should do ANYTHING until Sony says so. If you try now, you're taking a risk.
