If not for love I would be drowning
I’ve seen it work both ways, but I am up

Riding high amongst the waves

"if not for love I would be drowning"

Maybe Eddie is saying "if I didn't love her I would be drowning HER out here in the ocean"

Ed has written dark stuff.

    I've seen it work both ways, but I am up

    (I need love to stay "afloat" in life, and I've seen love hurt and make things worse, but with the love in the relationship I'm in now, I am "up" and in a relatively good place)

    I think "If not for love I would be drowning" might mean the person would be overwhelmed and sinking without love.

    Yeah, I don't think this one is too hard to figure out. Life was rough. He's in a happy place now and glad he stuck it out.

    great song, but what lacks on backspacer, and st for that matter, is that the lyrics are what they are. there is no reading into them... he's simply saying were swimming in the damn water and if it wasn't for your love id be drowning.
    Further back and forth a wave will break on me, today...

    But can't "drowning" be used as a verb? As in "I saw the killer whale drowning the trainer"
