I know that Nine Inch Nails gave away The Slip for free on their website. Does anyone know of any other bands or sites that offer free downloads?

Depending on what kind of music you like, daytrotter.com is a good place for indie stuff. They have artists come in and record a few songs, then release them for download. Sometimes it's straight up from albums, but sometimes they'll be unreleased songs or tweaked versions. Daytrotter has been around for a while, so they have a pretty large archive. NPR has a great podcast where all they do is record entire live shows. If you search for All Songs Considered on itunes, it'll show up as the live concerts. They also have a pretty strong back-catalog. Amazon is also really good at discounting their mp3 albums (which are of decent quality), so if you don't mind paying $3-$5 you can often get lucky with finding an album you want. That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but I hope this helps.
