Tom Petty Underrated

The 2010 Tom Petty tour is coming at a perfect time for me. For years I have been a fan, but mostly of his hits. I never really knew there was a second tier of absolute greatness.

I finally figured it out this year when I bought a turntable and picked up most of his collection on the cheap on vinyl and watched the Running Down a Dream documentary.

So lets give some love to the "second tier" petty songs.

I'll start

INSIDER!!!!!

  • LOVE the last DJ album

tho, i wouldn't at all call petty underrated. i've been on board every tour/album since 1986. there is a huge wealth of great songs there. least fave album would be echo

    hey spike...what do you like?

Echoes is the only album I don't have in any form
  • Echo is my favorite Petty album. Just a fantastic record. You guys gotta give it another shot.

it's funny, i got into him in reverse. got the greatest hits and picked up his newer stuff before i even heard the first 4 albums. mike campbell is so underated as a guitarist.

Just picked up the live anthology and i must say that their version of goldfinger is badass.

down south, when money became king, don't fade on me, swinging, and love is a long road are some very overlooked songs .
  • I think every Petty album is great, while some a cut above the rest, like Wildflowers, Full Moon Fever and of course Damn The Torpedoes. Not really a fan of the first two albums though. I haven't seen the band live yet; still waiting for 'em to do Europe, which they haven't in a long time already.

I love down south. Mike Campbell is really great, very tasteful in his playing.

  • I don't have Long After Dark yet, but Straight Into Darkness is one of his best ever. Great version of it in Live Anthology.

i do find some recent irony in tom petty singing about sitting in golden circles on the last dj(money becomes king) but on the flip side of things he is offering a download of his new cd called MOJO with every concert ticket purchased and along with that ya get 8 live songs from the 2009 tour. so glass 1/2 full :)

    bottomline

    TOM PETTY RULES
  • I frickin love Wildflowers.. "Only a Broken Heart" is a fave but the whole album is great.. Also, the soundtrack for She's the One, by TP and the Heartbreakers, has some excellent music..

  • I think Tom Petty is definatly underrated. I don't know what its like in most places, but here in Toronto and surrounding area you can't even find a Petty/Heartbreakers album unless its Full Moon Fever, Greatest Hits, Damn the Torpedos and if your lucky you'll find Wildflowers or Into the Great Wide open. Thats only half the catolouge. I picked up Hard promises in Florida while I was there. I guess people don't buy it anymore. It seems that younger people now (I'm only 23) don't appreciate his lyrics or melodies...its not "loud" or "heavy" enough...too bad...

Got Chicago tickets today....awesome...not sure how a Wilbury can be underrated though.

In my experience, Tom Petty is NOT underrated. One of the few artist you can put on for about any group of people from ages 25 to 65 and they will love it. I LOVE Tom, doesn't get much better than Petty!
Twenty-ten watch it go to fire!!!

I think most people mean he's underrated in terms of people don't go far into his music. Everyone loves Tom Petty, but how many people can name more than 2 songs that aren't on his Greatest Hits?

Either way, he's an amazing artist and he's one of those musicians that I don't really know of anyone that dislikes Tom Petty. Can't wait until this summer - it's one concert where everyone I know, count-music fan, parent, or Deadhead will go to :)

First time I saw petty live was at the bridge school benefit with young, pj, ministry, etc. I got to be honest with you, petty ripped everyone to shread!!!! But fast forward 15 years later and nome of those bands nor mr petty got anything on our boys!!! But man petty does fucken rock!!!
  • All I remember about Tom Petty is at the Denver show with Pearl Jam this dude behind me says...."He needs to take that vest off. That's ridiculous." I just about pissed my pants it was so damn funny and so out of left field. It's since become an inside joke when critiquing the fashion sense of strangers.
