I am 99.5% sure that they will play "Just Breathe". It is their current single that is still in the Hot 100, top ten Rock & Alternative. Last time they went on they played WWS after Avocado was released. I can't seem them not playing it.
So really, the only thing to figure out is what the second song will be. I really have no idea but I think we can rule out a few songs of Backspacer. (And we can completely rule out old songs. They're just not playing old material. Impossible)
Rule out:
1) The End - assuming they're playing JB, there is no way they play 2 slow, acoustic balads.
2) Speed of Sound - again, kind of the same reasoning. Plus, on the last tour they barely played this.
3) Got Some - already played this on TV w/ Conan.
Unlikely:
1) GSMF - they could play this one but I doubt it for some reason.
2) Johnny Guitar - great, fun song but I think they might use SNL appearance to break the next single and I don't think this will be it.
3) The Fixer - it was a hit and it would work well on TV but it's long since been retired from radio
4) Supersonic - B-Side to the Fixer, so not a likely candidate
Possible:
1) Amongst the Waves - Sing-along chorus. Potential single.
2) Unthought Known - Great live song and a simple arrangement. Probably easy to do for the band on a TV show. Potential single
3) Force of Nature - A beast.
So my guess (after a detailed analysis and solid waste of time at work) is:
1) Just Breathe
2) Force of Nature
"Darkness comes in waves, tell me, why invite it to stay?"
1st song: "Just Breathe"... this is their latest single that is still doing well in radio.
2nd song: I'd say "Unthought Known"... just a guess. "Amongst the Waves" is a good guess too, but I think they'll play "UK".
Maybe that's not fair that two Eddie songs will get played, but that's my guess. It's a little late to promote "The Fixer" at this point, in my opinion. When did that song first get released? Last July, right?
As stated, Just breathe is the current single, so that is easy. The other problem is that Force of Nature is great on the album but not good live because of the dropped guitars for Ed. Unthought Known was from what I could tell the live hit of the Backspacer tour so I would think that would be the choice. It would also be a good launching point for it as a third single.
Seriously people? Just Breathe seems like a gimme. Song two is definitly up in the air, I hope its not The Fixer. Unthought Known would be great, supersonic maybe. Maybe....a....NEW SONG?!?!?!?!?! yeah right.
Just Breathe (current single, ofc they will play it)
Amongst The Waves (third single)
Too bad Got Some didn't catch on, would like another televised try on that one (not a fan of the Conan performance).
And I think they will play ATW. Eddies voice will be struggling, thin and he will used that "holding back the power" kind of singing. People watching will not be hooked. Eddies voice and style of singing from TEN and on Alive/Evenflow/Jeremy would have sent ATW far up the charts, if that song was a single from the Ten/VS era it would be a huge hit.
But I don't think the general audince will "feel" it due to Eddies struggling voice. It's an anthem that would have rocked with that "clean" and powerful 90s voice. Now it feels not to it's full potential and will not make an impact on the charts.
But maybe they play something new or a cover. But the 10c news says they will play songs from backspacer... so, my guess is JUST BREATHE and AMONGST THE WAVES.
Would have liked forced of nature or unthought known - even though I think that they share the same problems that ATW has. The general public would not feel the songs as they feel KoL or Coldplay etc, mostly cuz of Eddies raspy (is that a word?) and held back voice. I think what attracted most people to PJ was the anthem-kind of songs with the strong vocals, now I think they would have better luck with something softer (like Just breathe/last kiss etc) or some clever punkish song (Save you could have been a hit I feel, or supersonic, got some etc)

They played "Got Some" on Conan, so I don't see their playing that again on national TV. "The Fixer" is too old as a single, but then again, it's a great spring-summer song, and spring will be just a week away. And, heck, it was a successful single.
I'd like to see "Force of Nature," but its lyrics are too image-rich for the show, and it's a deep cut. I consider it one of the record's strongest songs, however. "Johnny Guitar" would be awesome, too.
If one of the lighter-sounding tracks shows up, I'd hope it's "Speed of Sound" over "Just Breathe" and "The End." "Speed of Sound" has great movement, kind of like the ebb and flow of waves.
I'm going with "Unthought Known" and "Johnny Guitar."

I would love it if they played force of nature, amongst the waves, or unthought known, but I think they'll play a pair like Got Some and Just Breathe.
(Which would be fine too.)

What's that song like live? I imagine it rocks but is too short. The yeah yeah yeahs at the end seem like that'd cool live.

What I'm hoping for is: Johnny Guitar and Unthought Known/Got Some
Just Breathe

Yeah and it also just makes sense for the quieter song to be played later.
And don't rule out three songs either. They played three in 1994 plus SNL needs all the filler they can get these days.

Here could be a bonus tiebreaker question: who will Eddie hug first during the closing credits?
Bill Hader
Got Some
If they play a third then Just Breathe will be the second
(Which would be fine too.)
