I am visiting the family farm in Indiana when I was out choping holes in ponds for the cows to get water. I was on the last hole and next thing I know I was waist high in water. I was never so cold in my life. I struggled to shore because my boots kept on getting stuck in the mud. I made out and to the farmhouse and jumped in the shower. I ever expiereced anything like that before. I've seen it happen on TV, but never thought I would ever go through it. Drinking hot chocolate and trying to get warm

yeah its cold outdoors during the winter and while standing in ice water.
you are lucky it was only waist deep.
    becareful next go 'round.

when i was younger i walked into the house plenty of times as solid as stone because i fell through the ice in the creek while hunting or trapping. thank god for woodstoves and hot lemonade.

Last spring I helped a friend put his dock in. At one point we were neck deep in water that was cooler than 50 degrees. I say that because I took a reading with a thermometer of 52 degrees on the top layer of water right next to the shore.. We were atleast waist deep, 50 feet off shore for a good two hours.

Fortunately my friend I was helping is an ER doctor and he told me I had nothing to worry about as long as my body was still shivering.

I take it I'm the only one who wades across icy mountain rivers in the middle of winter in bare skin on purpose... Yeah, it's cold, but it takes a long time to kill you.

This is terrible, buy many years ago when I was a kid, my cousin, my little brother and I were out wandering around the countryside. We don't often get cold enough weather here to freeze over a pond or creek. This year there was ice on a small creek. My cousin and I talked my little brother into "testing" the ice. He fell through. It was just a skinny little ditch and he made it out fine, but he was soaked to the bone. When we got back to the house we were all afraid we were going to get in trouble so we made him wait outside behind the house while we tried to sneak dry clothes out to him. It was below freezing outside. We got caught.

  • This happened last Saturday just outside the town that I live in. One of the saddest stories you will ever hear.

I experienced REALLY cold water for the first time in December when I was in NZ....I put my ankles in this lake which was surrounded by snowcapped mountains and it was FREEZING. I could feel the chill through to my bones and could only last 20 or 30 seconds at a time in the water. All my kiwi friends laughed because it wasn't cold at all to them and a 2 year old was sitting in the water in front of me playing...the little bloody show off! ;)

I can't even comprehend being cold like the OP was describing....and I don't think I want to!

How long could you last in freezing cold water like that?

Depends. Up to your knees or waist, quite a while. However, if your torso is submerged, it will go a lot faster.

Everyone is different. Depends on your strength and will to live. That being said, I don't see anyone treading freezing water for a half hour before they are just exhausted and sink. Maybe somebody with a lot of fat could float and be insulated and last that long. Not sure.
