Fender Jazzmaster question (lefty)

I am a lefty and it is hard to come by good guitars. I bought an epiphone Casino a few years back of ebay, and I love the guitar, but it's just not as versatile as i'd like because the neck isnt comfortable for me. I have big fingers. anyone have any experience with this model??

Since then, I have been saving up and noticed a Fender Jazzmaster for around a grand on southpaw guitars website, but i've never played one. it looks as thought the neck is bigger than the jaguar, so i'm thinkin about it.

Also on my potential list:
Gibson SG ($1300 though!)
Epiphone G400
Dan Electro DC-2

Thanks!
Jon

  • At 6' 11", my hand are about as big as they get....I loved my Jazzmaster, but it wasn't entirely versatile either...I owned it for about four moths before I ended up selling it...it was dead sexy, but I was not a fan of its overdriven tones (or lack thereof)

  • Seymour Duncan's "Hot for Jazzmaster" pickups will transform that guitar into a tone monster. Trust me on that.

That being said, I know the SG/G400 neck is a tad wider than most, which makes it a nice and comfortable guitar for ham-fisted, sausage-fingered players. Ibanez's Artcore semi-hollow models are also nice and roomy on the fretboard.

The thing that screws over lefties is that you can't follow the first rule of guitar buying: Try before you buy. Even at the biggest Guitar Center locations I've been in, there are usually four left-handed guitars in the store, and they're usually a Les Paul, Tele, Strat, and a Martin or Taylor acoustic. In other words, nothing besides the prototypical choices.

That said, from what I know about the guys at Southpaw, they're incredibly friendly and helpful to buyers who are shopping via computer screen and telephone, so ask them for recommendations and for the run-down on their inventory. You gotta use any help you can find when your options are limited like that.
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.
  • FWIW, I bought an Epiphone Sheraton, put in two P-Rails pickups, and now have one HELL of a versatile guitar!
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V

yeah, good points, thanks. Thanks everyone else too.
I am heading to guitar center tomorrow to hold some comparible righty models to see how the neck feels.. but just as you know it still really isnt the same thing as playing a real lefty. ;)

They have had the same 4-5 lefties in that store for years it seems. We need another Kurt Cobain to hit the scene so they beef up their stocks.
