Johnny Cash is 10 billionth iTunes download

A Johnny Cash song has become the 10 billionth song sold online by Apple iTunes.

The track, I Guess Things Happen That Way, became the lucky song to net a customer a $US10,000 iTunes gift card.

The online service is seven years old.

Research outfit NDP Group says the tech company retains about two-thirds of the music download market and 25 per cent of all songs are now sold from the iTunes store.

The pace of Apple's online music sales has continued to grow rapidly over the past few years.

It took three years to get to 1 billion song sales, one year to get from 1 billion to 2 billion and now the store sells 1 billion songs about every three months.

Even though all songs bought from iTunes have been playable on non-Apple devices since 2009, the formative years when this was not so helped establish the site's dominance.

The entertainment industry is growing even more dependent on Apple, with iTunes now trying to duplicate its success with the TV and movies market.

Illegal downloading has gutted the music industry and is starting to eat away at DVD sales.
