People who try really hard to spread the word of Jesus...

Today I was walking to work and this pick up truck stopped beside me and asked me if I'd like some reading... I knew what she was about to give me but all I could say was "uh..." (hey, i was running behind and hadn't even had my coffee yet!)

She started going on about the bible so I politely told her no thank you...

but it perplexed me why she would go to all the trouble to stop me on the street and hold up traffic to try and spread the word of God... were they like, "oh look at that girl walking there... she might want to hear a little more about Jesus!" so they stopped their huge honky tonk truck and held up traffic to give me the low-down on God? :D
They must have atheist radar or something!

I'm sure there are worse things you can be offered on the streets of America, or in your case Canada.

Dude, you've got to get quicker vocal reflexes. When someone does that to me, I say back to them "I was just going to ask you the same thing - I wanted to tell you about Jesus Christ". Then thinking I am a believer, they leave me alone.

I know it's not what you mean by this thread, but it is really perplexing how America is getting hijacked by evangelicals. Living overseas it is funny how other countries think we are loons, not because of Bush or wars, but how so many are trying to make the freedom from religion country a theocracy.

That's right - we don't need to hijack commercial planes to crash into buildings to spread our gospel.. we have army planes spreading freedom instead...

    CONservative governMENt

Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. - Louis Brandeis

I think people looking to convert others notice people who look open. That's probably why they pick on you. It kinda sucks, but it's better to fight this type of person off than to be closed up.

    Don't worry.
You're up to pushing them away. (!) :)

She was probably newly born again. Those that have recently joined the club are seemingly more encouraged to spread the word and recruit more souls/donors at this key moment in their journey as they are full of faith and exuberance about their conversion. It's like when you get a new hobby and your way into it at first. You buy all the stuff and get all the books, but eventually you settle down a bit.

I think the ones that openly talk to people like that do so cuz somewhere in the bible it says they are suppose to witness to others, so they do.

  • I had an elderly couple stop by my house early Saturday morning with their god this and god that. It is like these people think that somebody like me who dosen't believe in too much religion never sits down by myself or with friends and think or talk about why there are different animals on the planet. Or why there are trees or if there is an afterlife and what is it like. So I played with their heads for about half and hour then politely told them they didn't need to read me anything and told them to have a great day.

I guess the people who are spreading the word must really want to see me in their heaven.

So, are the 4,000 to 12,000 (estimated) Muslims in today's US Army "spreading the gospel" with army planes too? How about the atheists or jews... they're "spreading the gospel" too?

What I don't understand is (and I'm a follower of Jesus Christ), these people try to push their beliefs on people and as human beings we are, by our very nature, defensive and put off by such actions. I'm one that believes in spreading the teachings of Jesus Christ with as few words as possible. Basically, you should let your actions speak for you.

One thing I could never understand is why people get in such an uproar when you talk about ministering to people in bars. I'm not talking about night clubs, where everyone's trying to pick each other up, I'm talking about the dark places where people are alone mostly and drinking away their trouble. I don't mean go in there with your Bible and hold service, I mean just make yourself available to talk to these people. Show that you give a crap about them.

My wife does something similar to this with inmates. She goes to the county jail every Tuesday. They talk about God and Jesus, but they aren't forcing anything onto anyone and they definitely aren't preaching at them. The women don't have to be there. Most of these women my wife ministers to are just looking for someone to vent to, to talk to. They have had some horrible experiences that I can't even imagine. Yet they are much much more receptive to God's word when it is coupled with actions that show you really care for them. They feel loved, and that is something more powerful than any scripture ever written or any word ever spoken.

Which Gospel are you talking about? Which Christian religion? Is your religion the one true word of God?

Girl, I was raised southern baptist. In their opinion Ghandi, Sidhartha Gautama, the still remote peoples of South America and Africa are all going to hell with Hitler, Charles Manson, and me.

To be Christian (again, in their opinion) you have to believe in the virgin birth and the resurection. The teachings of Christ; tolerance, forgiveness, blessed are the peace-makers, etc. are moot points and rarely followed by most of the so-called christians that I have known.

  • my bookmark that I use is a pamphlet titled:

    ARE YOU GOING TO HEAVEN?

    FIND OUT INSIDE!

and in the pamphlet there is a checklist of "good deeds"... pretty much by anyone's standards.

then it gets to the good part...

FORGET ABOUT THAT CHECKLIST. THE ONLY WAY YOU ARE GOING TO HEAVEN IS IF YOU TRULY BELIEVE JESUS DIED FOR YOUR SINS AND ROSE FROM THE DEAD!

    ....

    seriously...
