you know they aren't bringing their entire stage setup/amps/guitar rigs etc with them to play 2-3 songs on snl, right?
you know they'd need those things to play a show, right?
you know the date is 3 weeks away, right?
-The band will already have their amps, guitars, drums, etc in town, and can rent any other instruments needed from S.I.R., which many/most major acts do at some point (just look for red road-cases) when playing one-off shows. Hell, I've even rented a 12 string acoustic guitar for Kirk Hammett from freakin' Sam Ash for their one-off symphony show at MSG in '99, so availability of equipment is not an issue in NY.
-PJ uses the local arena's stage, so PJ typically doesn't travel with a stage anyway. And smaller theaters the stage is fixed (except Hammerstein, that's mostly sectional, but it's usually left up and adjusted as needed for whatever the next act is).
-Most local lighting companies do one-off shows. Same with sound, though PJ is very partial to Rat, but they can easily fly their FOH and monitor engineers to work with them on local equipment.
But I'm sure you already knew this.
...that being said, I don't know if they are any more likely to play a show just since they're in town doing SNL that night. When I worked with metallica playing SNL, the band spent half the week with their equipment at a rehearsal space practicing, and the other half at SNL rehearsing, then performing a taped rehearsal then live on Saturday. Not to say there couldn't be a show before or after, but it's not likely for the week of the broadcast.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you.

Accustic show, rent the stuff from a music store in NYC like MTV. They could sell out The Beacon. Le's face it, we would all buy tickets to see them, even if they played using armpit farts. I would LOVE to see Ed play Lukin on his armpit!!!
