depends where you planning to be?

your hotel link would mean you'd be a fair distance out from the wonderful old city of Edinburgh.

http://www.smartcityhostels.com/home.html is right in the heart of the city and the rooms are excellent.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

Portobello is an alright area (my sister used to live there) but as Dunk says you may want to be closer to the centre of the city.

I don't know about budget hotels in Edinburgh as usually stay with friends or family but am sure Dunk knows what he's talking about ;)

So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?

    in Edinburgh?

if so then you have to visit Edinburgh Castle... it has a great tour!
Calton Hill is a good walk and the views are amazing.
Scottish Parliament is a love it or hate it building... but again its informative inside it.

that website has a lot of info on it for things to do.

As for drinking... tons of pubs in the area.. Old Town has many on the main High Street and they are a mix between really old 400 year old style pubs to contemporary style pubs... New Town has Rose Street which is just behind Princes Street... it is a whole street filled with many bars/food/etc...

I prefer the old town to the new town but thats because i love the architecture more... it has more history... and New Town isnt really a new town by the way.. it was built in the 1700s or something. 8-)

If you are in the new town if you head a minute or twos walk further away from Princes' Street to Stockbridge there are some nice non touristy pubs like The Bailie and The Antiquary (the 'Tic  )
