  • At the end of the PJ/Neil Young set at the Reading festival in 95 Mike got his amp on fire from attacking it with his guitar.

  • Yup....and at some point, Eddie Smashed a guitar (blue SG I think???) and then handed it to a fan to his left that was seated in a wheelchair. I was third row dead center and the look on the guy's face was that of pure content and overwhelming gratefulness.....fyi, it was my first time being that close at a seated show,(made front row at a German show) and I had a flash camera and was, admittedly, super annoying....., it was back in the film days, so I shot my roll (laughing to myself) before Eddie smashed his geeeetar....no photos of it, but it is burned in my head though....

AND.......maybe I am just a complete idiot, but on the cover of MSG from 2003, it shows eddie swinging a blue SG or SG type guitar and is about to smash it to bits... (i forget what the other models are that he uses that look like SG's but aren't Gibsons etc.....Merkel, Merman, Mernotgunnacomewithit...)

So, here is why I may be an idiot....I was at both MSG shows and dont remember Eddie smashing a guitar...so I always have looked at that pick and said, "hey, there's the guitar smashing at Key Arena, hmmm, wonder why it is on the cover of MSG" every time........like I said, Im and idiot, regardless if I am right or not......

Up to date the only thing I've seen smashed on stage at a PJ show has been a tambourine over Ed's head, by Ed.
I am lost, I'm no guide, but I'm by your side

  • Pittsburgh 2000 - Mike smashes, I think it was a teal stratocastor at the end of Porch. I knew it was doomed te minute he started playing it, given it wasn't his normal guitar and was the last show on that leg of the tour. But I guess more people remember this show for the Wash umbrella...

Was at the VH1 Rock Honors, and mike let his guitar smash into the stage. Nice effect in homage to The Who.

You're not an idiot. It's not in the MSG shows, but it is in one of the extras. Can't remember which song, but if I remember correctly it's part of a montage of various concert shots.

They dont do it now days. Read once where Mike said he felt gulity or something along those lines for doing it. But i dont think it has happened since 2000 tour as we all can see on TB2000. Saw Stone do it back in 1995 but he was really angry back in those days. Is the one mentioned about Ed on the cover of the Live At The Garden?

  • Yeah, Mike at Pittsburgh 2000. I was in the second row and did it right in front of me. That was a great show. I think they opened with Even Flow if I remember. Bad ass.

  • LA 98- ed poured heineken across the stage, did a Pete townshend slide and smashed a white SG. I'm pretty sure mccready did in a guitar at the Tibetan freedom show too that year. Now that I think about it, mike was actually quite a guitar destructor around that time. Ahhh the yield tour. If only there were a time machine.

My first PJ show....New Orleans 1995.... during Blood. Ed smashed the mic stand and bent it in a boomerang shape.... Mike smashed a telecaster(I think) and Jeff or Ed threw it into the crowd causing a near riot. My sister and I were about 10 feet from where the pieces landed. Man, my memory is not what it used to be!!!!

  • I've only been to 6 PJ concerts in all my life, yet I got to witness a guitar-smashing!

It was at Mansfield in 2000. It was by far the best, most poignant concert. Less than 2 months after Roskilde, the evening had a once-in-a-lifetime vibe that will never be matched. A barefoot Eddie was hiding behind a beard, yet his intense love for the audience came shining through.

Mike was decked out in WHITE LEATHER! He was even more 'on' than his usual rocking self. At the end of the show, he dramatically smashed his expensive electric guitar into the stage. It was ridiculous, but it was Rockstar Cool.

    Ahhh, memories......

Also during the same tour, the RDS show in dublin, Jeff played the last song with the head on fire. He set it alight with one of the many candles that were on stage. I think he might even broke the bass at the end of the show

Haha, yeah! I was there too! Very back row top balcony almost 90 degree angle from the stage! Haha!

I saw Mike destroy his guitar after "All Along the Watchtower" in San Francisco in 2006 and then Ed laid it on the stage and used it as a surfboard. Right before they were about to do "Yellow Ledbetter", Ed asked Mike over the mic if he was gonna destroy that one too, Mike held his Fender sunburst strat close and I read his lips, "No I like this one!"
