The other day I was trying to think of when MTV "jumped the shark". It seems to me that it was the mid to late 90's. Probably not coincidentally when mainstream rock started to suck again, and Beavis and Butthead were off of the air.
i would say 1995 or so, when grunge ended. beavis and butthead petered out, as did daria. as did the other shows.
what i dont get is, why mtv would switch from being an almost all music all the time station in the 1980's/1990's, to what it is now, which is basically a reality show network. Yeah, music videos arent as essential to sell an album anymore, but still, there are some amazing works of art out there in music video form.
It makes no sense to me. Modern humans seem to be victims of whatever you put in front of them. If all you put in front of them is crap, asinine tv shows like survivor, or the biggest loser, or road rules, or real world, then people eat that up.
but conversely people eat up quality and timeless tv shows like arrested development as well.

I would go with '97 or '98. AT the end of every year MTV would do their Top 100 videos of the year and in '97 they kinda stopped. They would show part of the video and or have messages going along the bottom of the video. That kinda pissed me off cuz I would always tape them. I probably have a few thousand videos on VHS tapes.

I've never really been a fan of music channels, in particular MTV. The entire thing seems to smack of effort and there's only so many minutes I can watch of a presenter's vain attempt to appear as though they have their fingers firmly on the pulse of the music.
It was amazing in the 80's...watching it as a kid with big eyes...and it was a major factor in breaking Nirvana & Pearl Jam in the early 90's, when Alternative Nation & 120 Minutes were essential viewing...since then it hasn't been worth a shit.
