Hey all. Been wondering this for years, but never bothered to ask about it.......

I am just listening to the Toronto 2000 boot and have always wondered about the little intro Ed plays on Immortality? Does anyone know what it is?

Is it a known song or is it just a little improv.? I've always really liked it . . . . If anyone knows, that would be great!

Have a listen here:

im open to correction but i think that was played for the first time in berlin in october 1996 as an intro to immortality. its now played quite often but the version from berlin is masterful. id say the reason its played is because it very similar to the intro of the song. just my 2 cents. immortality is my fave pj song along with wishlist

i wish i wish i wish i wish, i guess it never stops

Just listened to the Berlin version from '96 . . . it is indeed very nice . . . so it's simply an improv? not a cover/sample of a known song?

sorry, I'm mixed up today. I believe the intro to Immortality is an improv or just might be a variation of the notes that are played at the beginning of Imortality.

I was thinking of Romanza which has been played as in intro to Better Man.

    both are incredible.

'Kay . . . I was going to say that I didn't think it was Romanza . . . just searched Romanza on YT and it sounds nothing like the Immortality intro. in question :) But I DO remember reading that Romanza has been used as an intro. for some songs... (Better Man for one, like you said)

I beleive it is some kind of warm up that Ed did to make sure his guitar is tuned for that song and just developed into an "improv"..

If you listen to alot of boots , you notice he plays that shorter version"improv" guitar noodle often when he's taliking to the crowd, to keep his hands warmed up...

mostly before "Small Town" and "I am Mine"..

Check out the Boston 7/2/03 boot where Ed discloses to the crowd their intention to play every song in three night... he's playing that Immortality noodle in the background, but then jumps inot "I am mine"

(Yes, I need to get a life! )

    variation of a C

Thanks for all your input . . . I've always really liked the tune and thought I'd investigate it (10 years after the show I heard it at!). I have definitely noticed the guitar noodling he often does between songs (there is one he plays quite often for sure), but it's nice when he incorporates them into a song, like he does with the Toronto 2000 version of Immortality.......

    Now I know :)
