Pearl Jam's defining moments?

What is the moment during PJ's career that you will remember for always simply as "their moment"? Mine has to be Seattle night 2 on the Binaural tour when Stone hit the opening notes to Alive. Unplayed since Roskilde as you know and we were unsure as fans whether it would ever surface again. A first amazing and eventful decade topped off by a tragedy that could have destroyed them. Choosing to go on the US tour in itself took some doing but I'll never forget the moment I heard Alive on the boot or the moment I saw it even on the setlist on 5H. It must have been emotional in the room but it sent out a message that the healing had begun and now here we are 10 years later still enjoying the band and their music and nobody will ever forget those lost every time Stone hits those notes. PJ deserve the fans they have for continuing when they could so easily have stopped and they've rewarded us ever since.

That's crazy! I just read the OP and the only thought that went through my mind was the fact that they made No Code. Scrolling down to see it staring at me was startling. CantKeepMeHere, you are intelligent.

It's easy to forget that without this album they are probably done. Jack will always have a large place in my heart because he helped save the band. This was the beginning of a healing process. Anger still has its place, but now it's not just for its own sake.

  • not sure. 1994 seemed to be their defining year. Between Atlanta 94 on radio or Saturday Night Live, that year stands out more than any. Their Unplugged MTV appearance (92?)is up there as well. Too many to fathom.
  • I view it like this
Ten was huge and great and alot of bands have had first album success then Vs. great record love it and many bands have had second album success then Vitology same thing, great album and it showed enormous growth for the band and the way they handle their music -
NoCode was the beginning of the drop off for "mainstream" - No videos following Ten and around here there was not a single from NoCode that was played on the radio - but holycow what a complete piece of art - looking back now you can see how well and far and vast they were looking forward -it is a strong statement

Well....the early years will always be the defining moments because that is when they were being defined.

But damn, I still get blown away when I see VH1 Rock Honors. epic.

Edit: I will add the 05 tour also. A whole tour with no album visting places they have enver been. They can go anywhere and sell out anywhere and blow away bands that preceded them there.

How are they not selling 1 billion records?

    Several:

Jeremy video - everyone my age forgets just how often MTV played this thing. I was in college and I must have seen it 10,000 times. This put them on the map for just about everyone.

    Lollapalooza 1992

    Unplugged

    The Tickmaster Battle

Going from Vitalogy to No Code and losing a huge chunk of their fan base along the way

2000 - Bootlegs for every show in stores. We take boots for granted now but that was a big deal. Remember walking into Best Buy and seeing 100s of Pearl Jam CDs?!

2003 - Clashes with the media and fans in places like Denver, CO and Uniondale, NY for being early critics of the war and GWB.

2004 - Vote for Change FAIL - I think this was the moment where people finally realized musicians and other artists can't really change things. As much as they would like to anyway.

Avocado - Return to more of the mainstream. Videos, magazine covers, interviews, SNL, other TV shows. They were everywhere and for the first time I knew people who bought a Pearl Jam record who hadn't done that since 1994.

Love your simplicity. Very definitive moment indeed and I felt the same about Vitalogy for a while. No Code was the kind of gamble no band is willing to take and under a corporation as big as Sony makes it more impressive. Kurt Cobain gave in to Geffen's demands on In Utero to some extent but No Code is the sign of a band in full control and the album slowly revealed itself as a masterpiece and remains as one today. Some great periods of the bands career posted here :D

I think of pearl jam as a live band and not really a studio band so i would say releasing all their concerts with great sounding is one of the greatest moments of music in general so i would rank that as the highest and most defining moment of pearl Jam.

it gave fans access to concerts that they would never have heard from before and i believe established Pearl jam as a major touring force.

Virginia Beach 2000. I wasn't there but getting back on stage & facing deamons that must of been there is probably the most important moment in the bands life. This showed they cared about themselves, their music & the fans. Every time at a show when Ed mentions that you should look after your neighbour or take steps backwards this shows what great humans they are let alone how good their music is, that comes with the territory. I love this band so much.

The fresh panoramic sounds of Yield after the intense claustrophobia of Vitalogy and No Code.
Single Video Theory giving some much needed insight into how these years had shaped the band.
    Binaural!!!!
The Bush years and the criticism of Riot Act.
The return of playing to festivals.

yep...I have to agree, following up an album like Vitalogy with and album like No Code is probably THE defining moment of the band.

also, I'm sure some will disagree because they "sold out" with the Target distribution deal  ...but I have to say that self releasing Backspacer and having it be as successful as it was/is would have to be another defining moment.
"Well, I think this band is incapable of sucking."

  • Great Thread

Some good one's for sure have already been mentioned.

    I think I would add:

Vs - Releasing Go as the lead track. If they had released Daughter or smalltown first, it would have been very different
    - Decision to not make video's

The 2000 Tour was important for so many reasons

    - An amazing tour through Europe...then Roskilde
    - They have all said they almost broke up after that
    - Boots as an experiment
    - 50+ Shows in N.A.
    - It was during the Gore/Bush Election. They were really pushing Nader and that didn't end up so well.
    - It was promoting BInaural......which was a VERY different album
    - Ended up with TB2K
  • for me personally, it had to be toledo vfc when neil/peggy/frampton joined them on stage

or maybe when ev would break out the sequined jacket, the bush mask, and do the bushleaguer shuffle

oh and um the first time i saw mike smash a geetar has to count for something
