Watching the superbowl halftime show and realized The Who can not even perform The Who as well as Pearl Jam can perform The Who.

I agree with you but I bet if Ed and the boys last 46 years as a band, I'll bet there will be a younger act that could cover their songs with more energy and precision.
He who forgets will be destined to remember.

Maybe if the Seatle Seahawks go to the superbowl Pearl Jam will be asked to play.
  • yeah, Pearl Jam can make their millions in one night, rather than having to do a full tour

The Who weren't paid for this event. It's already been posted that, generally, when a band plays the Superbowl, the songs performed see an average of 555% increase in sales.

  • it was good advertising for cbs shows to have all of their themes songs played during the most watched sports event, but really, pj would have been an amazing pick for a half time act. they could have played all the csi 'theme' songs and gotten the crowd into it. of course their own songs would have been great too...

I thought they were real good. Much better than previous shows. Loved the lights show and good song selection.

  • I do agree they were great, probably my favorite in quite a while. I did enjoy, however, a lot of Prince's performance, as well as The Boss's a year or 2 back.

    I thought it was great....

I woke up this morning, and watched it again....

  • I'm surprised that most of you liked it. To be honest, I thought the stage swallowed them up and besides Townshend ripping for about 10 seconds, the show seemed boring. :o

Prince on the other hand was arguably the greatest performance I've ever seen.....not just at a halftime show. That guy was ridiculous!!

I agree 100% with both statements.. I am a Who fan, but It was pretty boring, and I am sorry but it's just about time for Roger to hang it up. I can appreciate the 46 years they have been around, but he sounds like he is laboring really badly to even sing a note. I found myself listening more to him struggling than anything else. :o(

I am also surprised that no one else mentioned the Prince show from a couple of years back! He sounded amazing and ripped the guitar to shreds. Do people on the board not really care for him? I am curious becasue that was on of the best half time performances ever IMHO.. anf the Boss has been mentioned before that which I find very strange..

  • The Who wrote great music. Daltry's voice is done. I don't care what anyone says, he can not match his vocal range (understandable) anymore, and I think he sounds like crap trying to. Very dissapointed, as I was when I saw them on tour 2-3 years ago.

as did i, and i gotta tell you, you go to Who concerts these days primarily to see Pete for both his fame and his talent...you only go to see Roger because he's famous, but you don't go to see him for his current talent.

here would be the percentage of reasons why you go see the who based on band members

    70% Pete
    20% Roger
    10% Back up members

I love The Who and listen to them all the time but it was aweful. They didn't have the timing right, Daultry's voice is gone, Pete even seemed irritated by it during the opening Pinball Wizard and the backup band looked and played like a bunch of props. I listen to The Who for 3 distictive musicians and 1 great voice unfortunately only Townsend sounded any good.

  • i will say this though, Roger's voice sounded better last night than usual.

I agree that was exactly what I said during the show- Pearl Jam does the Who better than the Who. Maybe we will see PJ in the halftime show before the next decade is out. That would be fun
I also thought when Eddie did City of Ruins man his voice was so much more beautiful than Springsteen's- the range, depth and emotion. I almost thought Bruce was thinking the same when Eddie took the stage like uh oh this guy can sing.

Wasn't the game in Miami? Isn't Miami in the SOUTH. There's your answer.

  • I was surprised at that performance last night. I last saw the Who in 2002 and they were awesome. Not awesome for their age, but just plain awesome. And that was after Entwhistle died. I know Daltrey's voice is basically shot but I was surprised that Townshend seemed pretty sloppy. Usually he is on fire.

It's certainly a tough venue for any rock band to perform. I think The Who should have just stayed out of this one. I know it'll be a nice boost of sales to them and might help them reach a younger audience, but I don't think they really did themselves justice last night.

They are still and always will be a great band, so I don't think people should be killing them for their performance but I cannot honestly say that I thought it was good.

From reading some of the posts, you'd think people went to see The Who and they just so happened to play a football game before and after their performance. For all the guys complaining, you' ll probably be on Viagra long before your 50 let alone 60. And for all the gals, you'll be able to find water in the desert soon enough.
