    "Golden" is my favorite.
  • Oh man, you came to the right place.

These guys are my clear cut #2 behind Pearl Jam for some time now.

First off, you need to obtain It Still Moves, Z and Evil Urges, their last three studio efforts. They will take you on a journey the likes of which you have never before seen. It Still Moves explores the depths of reverb-heavy spacey garage rock and still rocks my world every time I listen. Z is their masterpiece. It has everything and anything you want in a record. Evil Urges is their newest record, finding the band exploring the depths of their creativity and talent. All are awesome, all will blow you away.

However, the only way to get the full MMJ experience, my friends, is with a little buddy called Okonokos. MMJ is great in the studio, but their true grit is measured in their live act. Try "One Big Holiday", "Golden" "Xmas Curtain" "Off the Record" and "Gideon". Sit back, crack open a beer and enjoy.

If you want to dig deeper, Jim James (Yim Yames) released an EP this fall of a collection of George Harrison songs, as well as doing the first Monsters of Folk record with pals M. Ward, Conor Oberst and Mike Moogis.

They also have two earlier studio efforts before It Still Moves, At Dawn and The Tennessee Fire, both of which are rugged and raw and will rip you apart and haunt your dreams.

These guys are the best. Period.

phone went west is great. if you're listening to at dawn, then definitely check out just because i do and honest man. honest man is crazy. the song at dawn is great too.

check out it still moves as well. that album is just filled with great tunes. one big holiday, run thru, mahgeeta, dancefloors.

z is one of the easiest albums to listen to period. wordless chorus, it beats 4 u, dondante, off the record, and fucking law low. all great songs.

evil urges might take a little while to get into if you're starting off with at dawn. the songs are more...different. they're still likeable though. evil urges, i'm amazed, aluminum park, librarian, touch me i'm going to scream pt. 2, remnants are all great songs.

    hope this helps.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.
  • Thanks for all the help, really appreciate it.
I just watched Okonokos DVD again, unreal.
  • My personal favorites are:

    Two Halves (Evil Urges)
    Dondante (Z)
    Golden (from Okonokos)
    The Dark (Tennessee Fire)
Smokin from Shootin-->Touch Me Im going to scream pt2 (Evil Urges)

Dondante, especially if we're talking live. Hoo boy.

As a matter of fact, the NYE 08 show when they went Dondante->Smokin' From Shootin'->Touch Me Part 2 was one of the five best concert moments of my life.

I'm obsessed with "I'm Amazed," but I've never really listened to anything else by them

Get their last 4, counting the live one.

Some great tunes and a great progression stylistically so it never gets old.
  • cant get Off the Record out of my head
  • Listening to Rollin' Back right now. Never paid a ton of attention to this song in the past, but good lord. Jim James is absolutely ridiculous, and their drummer is one of the best in the business at the transition from soft, mood-drumming that fits perfectly into the background, to kick your ass jam/solo drumming

i understand people wanting to discuss their favorite songs by such and such a band, and i also understand that the o.p. asked for song suggestions......but i would strongly suggest to anyone who is trying to get into a certain band or musician, that has at least some sort of artistic merit, to listen to the albums first. i understand the whole i-pod generation thing where people just want to shuffle songs and make playlist and what not, but to really gain a full appreciation of the music you are hearing, i think it's important to hear the songs in the context that they were meant to be heard....that said, my mmj recommendations to you (o.p.) would be in the following order-

    at dawn
    z
    it still moves
    tennessee fire
    okonokos (live)
    evil urges

...and then all the b-sides/eps/demo compilations they have, because after hearing all of their lps, you will surely want to hear whatever is left. mmj is magical.
  • It also stands to mention that these guys didn't truly take flight until Carl Broemel joined the group. His sax in Dondante is sublime.

Librarian is just absolute perfection; the way the lyrics flow with the music.
I also like Lay Low, where the neverending guitar solo comes in.

  • I'll just write you a list, in no particular order, except for the first one:

    My favorite song: Strangulation!

    At Dawn
    The Way that He Sings
    Death is the Easy Way
    Just Because I Do
    Phone Went West
    Evil Urges
    Highly Suspicious
    I'm Amazed
    Smokin From Shootin
    Mahgeeta
    Dancefloors
    One Big Holiday
    Run Thru
    It Beats For You
    Off the Record
    Anytime
    Dondante
    The Bear
    Old Sept Blues
I Will Be There When You Die
    By My Car

I would really just recommend buying all of their records. Amazing band.
