All right. I have a confession to make. I am scared to buy Volume 1.

    There. I said it.

I really only got into Neil Young about 5 years ago and only have a handful of CD's. The archives is an overwhelming amount of material. I don't have a Blu-ray player for the top of the line box set, and I don't get the whole download feature where new material is released and you can add it to the set. I am kind of a dumbass when it comes to this kind of thing. Any info would be helpful.

Youngster, my understanding is that with a BD-Live compatible Blu-Ray player, when you get Archives, it's almost like buying a subscription to a service which simply adds content to the Archives discs (stored on the Blu-Ray player's internal HDD maybe?) as Neil Young puts it available. Although I have a Blu-Ray player, I'm also scared to buy it. I wish volume one were five separate values, so that I could justify buying one of them, and maybe gathering the other volumes slowly... it's just too much commitment to drop the $200 or whatever it is they're asking for this piece of art.

  • the thing that keeps me from buying it is with a price tag like it has it should include the albums from that era too. i still dont own all the albums from the time frame of vol 1 so why would i go out and buy demos of songs when i havent even heard the version neil thought was the best back in the day... i will buy these archives one day for sure, and if time fades away is on vol 2 that will almost be worth the price. but who knows. its a neat project but very expensive.

Time Fades Away is very easy to find, if you search around. A HDCD version that had been created in '95 (but never released) is the usual source, and sounds much better then the vinyl transfers.

As for the archives, I haven't picked them up yet. I don't want to spend $100.00 for the cd's, when I think I'd like to pick up the blu-rays. Not having a blu ray player, it's a expensive proposition though. So I'm happy to wait.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

If it's included in Archives 2, it will probably be broken apart with other live material from that era on a "performance series" disc, likely the first disc in the box. The album proper will probably get a seperate release like the first four albums just did. The unreleased HDCD sounds great - I don't know why Neil has to be such a crab about this album.

I have it, and it's fantastic! That being said, NY posted on his site that he would be re-releasing the albums form that period on BD following the Archives release. To date, I haven;t seen anything, but I sure would like to. While I agree they should have been included, I am happy with the stuff that was.

It pains me to say this as i love neil young and i waited for this to come out for so long, but i purchased the DVD version and I'm actually disapointed in it.
Lots of songs that were album versions or second and third takes and not enough un released material.

I think it is great if you want to hear 5 versions of sugar mountain to hear how the song evolved, but my expectations were it would be mostly unreleased material i had never heard and i would have liked more video footage on the DVD from back in the day for my 200 dollars i spent on it.

    That is just my opinion.
