Best Bass Lines?

I'm searching for the perfect stoned groove. For some reason I've been more intrigued to listen to the bass more often than I used to. Not sure why but I usually have a hard time hearing it, or do not realize that what I think is a guitar is actually a bass. Anyway, I'm searching for songs that have great bass lines. I'm more interested in the slower or mid-tempo pieces rather than faster rocking parts. Songs that come to mind are, and this is really random, New Life and Mouthful of Cavaties by Blind Melon. I'm sure there's some Pink Floyd that I have yet to discover as well.

What are some outstanding bass lines that have blown you away?

A lot of Paul McCartney stuff... I love the intro bassline of 'Sweet Child Of Mine'.. Simple and effective! As well as 'Closer To The Heart' by Rush.

+1 for Phil. Also, if you aren't averse to Jazz check out Jaco Pastorious/Weather Report.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

I would have recommended Rush, but it sounded like he was looking for less rock type stuff

I always liked Blur because of Graham Coxon's guitar work, but then I listened properly to the bass and Alex James is a genious. Nearly every song he adds something to. But Entertain Me on the album The Great Escape is fantastic

    Yeah buddy.

I'd say "Under Pressure" by Queen w/ Bowie

    or

    "Whip It" by DEVO

Both bass lines are so unforgettable...hell, one even helped that asswipe Vanilla Ice make some good dough.

In my opinion, the greatest bass playing EVER recorded, any genre, is Paul McCartney in "Something". If you have the chance to hear the recently released Beatles remasters, the bass is pushed way up in the mix on all the tracks, and it's amazing to hear. Also, check out the bass in "Rain", "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" and "Penny Lane". Wow.

Also one of my favorite bass lines: "The Real Me' from The Who, Quadrophenia
