It's being released here in the UK to raise money for the Haiti appeal...

What do you all think? (about the cover, not the raising money aspect)

I'm a big REM fan... I hate it.
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

  • eh, kinda weird switchin between so many voices. but i hear this song as saying "suck it up, life sucks for everyone". not so sure thats the message that should be sent
  • Yeah completely the wrong message to be sending. The whole effort just feels a little bit half-arsed to be honest. Oh and it sounds crap....
  • Absolutely agree, they've completely missed the point of the song and, if anything, I think it's a bit of an insult to the Haitian people.

I will not be downloading it, I'll just donate more money instead... Simon Cowell can keep his shit covers.

I know it's for a good cause and all, but seriously, only an idiot like Simon Cowell would cover a great song like 'Everybody Hurts". I wonder how Michael Stipe feels about this.

I know before it was released REM said they were happy for it to be used and wouldn't take royalties so they would also go to the cause.

They may have had an idea who was going to be recording and would have known of Simon's involvement.

Think there were some quotes out there. I'll go hunt :P
So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?

    Couldn't find quotes.

All I could find was confirmation that "The government has already agreed to waive VAT on the record and REM, who own the rights to the song, have also waived royalties on the charity track."

There were quotes from '05 from Peter Buck that it is a song that they often license for free for charity.

  • I just think the general sentiment of the song is completely inappropriate for this situation. I always took it as a 'sometimes life sucks, but we all go through shit so suck it up' kind of song. I'm not sure that's the message we should be sending to people whose families have died, whose homes have been destroyed and who have nothing to eat.

agreed, the song is about not letting the small hard-ships in life get you down. It's like they're saying the quake was a non-chalant problem that time itself will heal.
