First of all, I love boat shoes. I wear them all summer long. They are comfy and look great with anything.

As far as VW goes, I think they are at a pivotal point in their careers. They could stick with their image and embrace it, or completely change their image. I think they have found themselves a niche and they gotta milk it. However, bands with a gimmick like this fade away if they don't roll with the punches. Look at our boys, U2 or even Radiohead, they made it for the long haul because they adapted and changed their style and image. Did people think Pearl Jam would be making a record like Binaural ten years earlier? Did people think Radiohead would be making Kid A ten years earlier? Now, I'm not trying to compare VW to the aforementioned bands, just trying to make a point. I think both VW records are really solid and well constructed.

They're reluctant to embrace the image. They are not the victims. Just a couple smart dorky kids trying to break out of their awkward phases.
This my friend, is a perfect post. Well said!!
Further back and forth a wave will break on me, today...

Actually I think they diversified for their second album, and started taking their influences from Paul Simon, and other 1980s World Music artists

Most definitely. There are two or three tracks on Contra that could have easily fit on Paul Simon's Graceland.

I like VW - especially in the dead of winter. Reminds me there's something to look forward to. They're pretty fun live, too (once you look past all the screaming girls in the crowd).

    Same here.
My friend recommended Vampire Weekend to me and I disliked it.
Tried listening to a few other things online and still disliked them.
    SNL solidified it.

I've never actually listened to an album, but I saw them on TV once or twice, and I just didn't get it. There was one performance, I can't remember if it was SNL or Colbert Report, or maybe something else, that sounded so awful I thought it was a joke. They sounded like they were just dicking around, and it sounded like they were playing on toy instruments or something. If I hadn't known better because of seeing it with my own eyes, I would have thought the sound was being made by a Strummin' Smurf guitar, a Little Tikes One Man Jam, a rubber band and a wind-up drummer toy.
