Logistically speaking, what's the cheapest way for a traveling man to NYC to get to Hartford....definitely going to MSG shows but want to make a trifecta with the Hartford show as well.
Oh please, let it rain today, this city's so filthy, like my mind in ways . . .

  • Probably train...but I don't actually know if the commuter trains go as far as Hartford.

So much for being born in Connecticut, huh? :D
Although in all fairness, I never go as far as Hartford when I go visit, no reason to for me...until now! :D

I took a train from NYC to Boston not too long ago. I'm about 99.9 percent sure it stopped in Hartford on the way.

Sorry I'm not to up on my Northeast geography. I've never been up there so I don't know much about it. How about getting from New Haven to MSG?? I'll be staying with my brother-in-law who lives just outside of New Haven. Plan on flying into Hartford and renting a car for the week. We will be going to MSG (as long as we get tickets!) and to Hartford. Does the train you're talking about go from New Haven into NYC and from New Haven to Hartford? I don't really want to drive into NYC.

  • That's probably Amtrak. Metro North has commuter trains to go to Grand Central and takes a little longer but is probably a little cheaper.

we once took a train from stamford to hartford. took metro north up to new haven and connected to an amtrak train there for the rest of the ride. i remember the ticket agent trying to convince me it wasn't worth making the connection, that i should just take amtrak all the way as the savings was not a lot... maybe $2- 3 bucks per person (but this had to be at least 15 years ago)

So are you saying to take Metro North from New Haven into NYC and then take Amtrak to Hartford? We don't really use public transportation in Arkansas so I'm clueless when it comes to trains, subways, etc.

You can pick up either Metro North or Amtrak at Union Station in New Haven, both go to NYC. AMtrak (though more expensive) actually stops at Penn Station which is underneath the Garden. Problem is, they stop running trains early, so you'd have to take Metro North back to New Haven after the show(no problem, just a less luxurious ride)

Metro North is at Grand Central Station, so you could take a cab or walk to it after the show.

  • Will the Metro North still be running by the time the show ends?

Yea, you can pick up Metro North trains all the way until around 1:30 a.m.

Thanks, that was my next question. How much do these trains costs?

If Amtrak stops running before the show is over I guess it would be wise to drive from New Haven to Hartford. Is the traffic very bad between those two places??

There will be no traffic from New Haven to Hartford at that time but you won't be able to pick a rental car that late. If I were you I would stay in New York after the show and take Amtrak from NYC to Hartford the following day or take Metro North to New Haven (or Stamford) after the show and stay overnight and then rent a car. The drive from New Haven to Hartford is less than an hour and a real easy ride. Route 91 north with very little traffic. The congested area is south of New Haven to and from New York hence the need for two trains.

We will be flying into Hartford on the 23rd and not leaving until the 28th so we will already have the rental car. I think we'll just take the train into NYC and back both nights and then drive up to Hartford from New Haven.

You could take the train up to New Haven and hitch a ride to Hartford with us.

If that is the case, drive to Stamford, CT and take the train from there. Less of a train ride and nice safe parking garage at train station. Stamford is a smaller city than New Haven and the train station is easy access from the highway.

Well we will technically be staying in Hamden, CT. I just knew New Haven was the closest big city to it, that's why I said new Haven. So should we still drive to Stamford?

nah. New Haven to Stamford is about 45 minutes drive, and about an hour train ride. But since MSG gigs are on weekday, getting from New Haven to Stamford can get a little messy. you dont want to get stuck in traffic before the gig. you'd be safe if you take the train from New Haven to NYC. its about a 2 hr train ride. try to get on the one with the 'bar car'. cheap beers (2 bucks each), plus definitely some fellow jammers going to the show.
