Chavez Writes Off Haiti’s Oil Debt to Venezuela
Latin American Herald Tribune
January 27, 2010
CARACAS – President Hugo Chavez announced Monday that he would write off the undisclosed sum Haiti owes Venezuela for oil as part of the ALBA bloc’s plans to help the impoverished Caribbean nation after the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake.
“Haiti has no debt with Venezuela, just the opposite: Venezuela has a historical debt with that nation, with that people for whom we feel not pity but rather admiration, and we share their faith, their hope,” Chavez said after the extraordinary meeting of foreign ministers of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas, or ALBA.

don't compete; coexist
what are you but my reflection? who am i to judge or strike you down?
"I will promise you this, that if we have not gotten our troops out by the time I am president, it is the first thing I will do. I will get our troops home. We will bring an end to this war. You can take that to the bank." - Barack Obama
when you told me 'if you can't beat 'em, join 'em'
i was thinkin 'death before dishonor'

He does this to seem like a nice guy, then silently at the same time he shuts down the media.

#1) Why an "undisclosed sum"...wonder how much
#2) pretty easy to "write off debt" that there is no way in hell you would ever be able to collect anyhow.
And you think your media isn't silenced? Come on man, please dnt tell me you believe your media isn't censored.
I was first to say that! just kiddin' BB.
I think the US media has 100000% more freedom than any other country, especially compared to Venezuela's media. Which US station has been shut down for saying something against the government?
Now, of course, if members of the media suppress a story because of a relationship they have in the story, or a gov't official has influence with an individual, etc, I can see that happening - but I would say that is more-or-less at the discretion of the outlet, not the government. But I'd say that a story will pretty much be told by one network or another, at some point.
Is there something specific you can point to that contradicts that, like I did with the Venezuela press?

For real? I think you're fooling yourself, my friend.
ah ya for real, and you're not my friend. Stop fooling yourself reborn.
My own personal experience isn't consistent with his, is all.
Maybe we've gone to different countries.
Easy there! What countries are you referring to? I won't argue that the U.S. media is the most unfiltered in the world or anything, but there are at least a great many different sources available. If you tire of Fox news' "dumb it down real good" approach, you can find other options. Canada (where I'm from) is even better, IMO. You CAN get balanced news coverage here, and there are half-decent political and current events documentaries on TV all the time. I take some pride in this, and don't feel that the same degree of freedom is present anywhere else, with the exception of (parts of) Europe.
you can get unfiltered news in the US through many sources - so, censorship is not what ails media ... mainstream media has become a large corporation with it's goals centred around dollars ... journalism has been bastardized to suit corporate agendas ...
