Man throws shoes at face of Israel's chief justice
By Liel Kyzer, Haaretz Correspondent
Supreme Court President, Dorit Beinisch, was wounded on Wednesday when a man threw his shoes at her during court proceedings, hitting her in the face.
The impact of the shoes thrown caused Beinisch to fall. She was taken to a doctor and is in good condition. Police immediately arrested the shoe thrower.
Beinisch returned to work after the incident and was welcomed with a round of applause.
Eyewitnesses say Pinchas Cohen, 52, entered the court and pointed at Beinisch, confirming that it was indeed her.
Once her identity was confirmed, Cohen took off his shoes and threw them at her while yelling "traitor" and "you destroyed my life."
Courthouse guards say that Cohen is a driver who is often seen around the courthouse allegedly approaching people unsolicited.
Cohen was arrested in 2006 after threatening Jerusalem Family Court Judge Philip Marcus during a hearing was ordered to stay away from the court for three months.
Lawyer Tal Ron, who also witnessed the event, said, "We were in the middle of deliberations. Suddenly we saw a shoe fly from above heading directly toward the president. She bent forward and we heard a boom. The guards jumped on the man, ramming him in the head. We were ushered out of the courtroom; it was very chaotic."
Reporters in the courtroom said two shoes were thrown at Beinisch, but the second one missed. Beinisch's husband said the judge took a "tremendous blow" that knocked her off her chair.
The incident occurred during a hearing on the use of medical marijuana but it is believed that the shoe thrower was upset about an unrelated case.
President Shimon Peres, who is currently in Berlin, called Beinisch after the incident to ask how she was doing.
