Upon seeing this thread that was going to be my question....if there was no EV would you go and see Pearl Jam? My answer no and no again.

    but its STEVEN TYLER...

and ditto for pj... its EDDIE VEDDER.

were not talking about first/second generation bass players or drummers in a band thats had its fair share of change being brought back after a decade or two. were talking about the most identifiable member of the band in both instances.

would you see the rolling stones(if you were a fan) without jagger??? i dont think so.

This is like me going to see Michael Franti and SPEARHEAD and there's no MF. I don't think so either.

Oh, I agree with you. It's usually the singer who defines the band for me. For instance, I'm having a hard time accepting the new Alice in Chains as Alice in Chains.

But the OP said it's not the same band without EACH original member, and I find that interesting coming from a fan of Pearl Jam, since they've gone through so many drummers.

Also, I confess that I feel bad for valuing the singers over the other band members  so I'm interested in people's thoughts on that. Probably not the original point of the OP, but I don't feel too bad since he posted on the Train. ;)

Thats why they are front man...they are the quarterback of the band. With the other members you can replace them and have somebody play the same notes ( or very similar) but when it comes to singing its very hard to find somebody to reproduce that same sound. Think Megadeth without Mustaine and how hard that would be to replace. Its why when there is a feud in a band between 2 members the signer usually gets to stay ( unless the entire band hates the singer).

Well that depends because other members of a band can be as or more important than the lead singer. That is if that member is a key or main writer/lyricist in the band. I'm trying to think of a band like that.....maybe
Iron Maiden with founding member Steve Harris on bass. The band's career has been through and carried on with several lead vocalists then settling on Bruce Dickerson. The lead vocalist especially with success in a band define the band with his sound but if they aren't writing the lyrics they can easily become expendable.

Aerosmith did a album in the late 80's(I think late 80's) called "lightning strikes" with only 2 O/M's
Tyler and Bradford I believe, the Album got very little air play in my area.
the album was was great imo but when they got cleaned up and released permanent vacation you knew
that Aerosmith was back on track, I'll take a listen to the new singer but it's going to be a ruff sell for me,
I've grown up with that band from about 72' on and just can't imagine Aerosmith with out Tyler or even
    Tyler w/o Aerosmith.

Also I'm the type to blow sunshine up anybodies ass but Vetter has the golden voice much like Elvis had
and will always be around but.....PJ as a whole are with out a doubt one of the best and most talented bands I
have heard in a while too lose that would be a great loss to Rock-n-Roll.

I agree that it's just not Aerosmith without the crazy singer, and the same goes pretty much for any charismatic lead singer who "makes" the band (so it goes for EV and PJ too).

Along the same lines, I have a difficult time though with Townsend and Daltry calling themselves The Who, when their supporting players were NOT just supporting players, but seriously contributed to that band's image and success. Keith Moon stole the show from Daltry and Townsend, and John Entwistle played the bass like no one else, he completely was in his own league, and can't really be duped (although people try). So I wish Townsend and Daltry would really stop hiding behind their old band's name. I could understand when it was only Moon that was gone, but not with 50% gone. Aerosmith, on the other hand, could get replacements for the entire band, except for Tyler of course, and perhaps, Joe Perry.

Slash didn't do a season of Rockstar, that was Jason Newsted, Tommy Lee and Gilby Clarke.
