  • I'll be there in Boston. They tore down the HOB last year. This will be National show #4 for me. So excited.

    Finally, someone responded. :D

I may be back home (Boston) for that show ... if so, I too will be at the HOB.

Posted a couple pictures in this thread from when I saw them last year atthe Outside Lands Festival ...

I would love to see them, but they never come close to me.

  • So Boxer or Alligator, guys? That's the eternal debate...

If a gun was put to my head, I'd probably go with Boxer ... but honestly, I would never, ever argue anyone that chose Alligator. They are equally fantastic.

Hopefully the new one is as good as those two. I'd take Alligator over Boxer. Both are amazing.

    Alligator.

    Can't wait to see them!

  • I like the Alligator songs more live. Secret Meeting, Baby We'll be Fine, Daughters of the SoHo Riots all awesome live. And they finish with Mr. November a lot. That being said, Slow Show is my favorite National song hands down.

Those are both solid records mookeywrench, Im with ya on that. But refined their sound considerably to produce the last two. 80-90% of their live shows now are Boxer and Alligator. The Virginia EP is really cool too.

The Cherry Tree EP is as good as Alligator and Boxer.

I love the live versions of About Today and Fake Empire on the Virginia EP. Agree that the first two aren't on par with Alligator and Boxer.

Boxer is the best and I'm not sure I'm going to see them this tour.....I remember paying $20 to see these guys a few years ago, not $40. Sorry, but we needed someone to complain in this thread 8-)

I saw these guys at NYU for about $15 and they're playing Radio City for $40. I'm not here to bitch and complain about prices, but I can't pay that much to see The National.

    I love 'em though.

My thoughts exactly...and I saw them at the Brookyln Academy Of Music (BAM) for the same price

  • I will say this...the first time I saw them was in 2008, supporting R.E.M. and Modest Mouse at the Tweeter Center (aka Great Woods) and they opened up at 6:30 with the sun still out. They sounded horrible. They aren't a band that fits with arena or amphitheater-sized venues. But smaller venues, a room with solid acoustics like the House of Blues Boston, they sound like the best new band of the past 10-15 years.

By the way, R.E.M. killed it that night. Such consummate professionals. Might have been the tightest hour and forty-five minute set I've ever seen.

unless they're co-headliners, support bands don't get an individual sound set up unique to their wants and needs. All of the acoustics and live sound set-up is catered to Modest Mouse's or REM's board setup and The National just plugs in their gear and has to go with it. So if a band sounds horrible and they're a support band, you can't really be overly critical about it.

They sounded fantastic at Outside Lands last year, which is outdoors.

It was a smaller stage than Great Woods (outdoor ampetheatre), but, it was outdoors.

Link to a few pics on page 1.
