Because most of the record buying public will have switched off before 'gems and rhinestones'. It's not however any worse a choice than any other considering PJ don't actually sell many singles outside the fanbase. Unthought Known would help shift a few more copies of Backspacer if people would listen but PJ are never going to sell like in the early days and a lot of people don't listen just because it's 'them'. I'd love Gonna See My Friend personally but anything with a proper b-side would do. Oh except Speed Of Sound and Supersonic!!
Like a book among the many on a shelf...
Dublin 02 Arena - 22/6/10. Belfast Odyssey Arena - 23/6/10. London Hyde Park - 25/6/10. Berlin Wuhlheide - 30/6/10.
Manchester MEN - 20/06/12. Manchester MEN - 21/06/12
Here in Seattle, I heard it come on the radio... It was announced as "The latest from Pearl Jam's Backspacer" kinda sounds like it is the next single....
This would be a HUGE hit. Another a similiar note: why wasn't Black, In My Tree, and Immortality chosen as singles? Is it because PJ is bad a choosing them?
You people are nuts. It's a long, rambling song with no hooks and no chorus. In fact it's the most boring song on Backspacer and it would never be a radio hit in a million years.

"Immortality" was a single played in Houston. I think radio must play different songs in different markets. The vitalogy songs played here were "corduroy", "Immortality", and "Betterman". I think I read somewhere, that "not for you" was listed as a single from the album, but it was never played down here.
I gave up on radio a long time ago. They play the same playlist over and over and it's all billboard chart topping hits. That's why you here a Nickelback single like every 30 minutes.
When "Binaural" came out, NIAS was in heavy rotation, and then I heard "Light years" for about a week or two and that was it.

I disagree, I think "SPEED OF SOUND" is the most boring song, UNTHOUGHT KNOWN does have a catchy line, 'YOU WILL BE NO ONE'S RIVAL'

How do you define single? By my guess, it's whenever a band releases the song on a CD (or MP3) along with a b-side (or live songs like PJ didin the past)
