perhaps more info on this will come in the future, but right now, I don't get it. I thought bands were at their label's mercy. How can KOL just switch and get a better deal? And why don't more bands do this?

  • Good for them. The article kind of answers your question, KOL are pretty much the golden boys of rock right now, any record label would kill to have such a high profile band on their books. Therefore they are in a unique position to be able to negotiate more favourable terms and conditions.

I understand how they can get a good deal, when they are free agents, but they were under contract. That's what I don't get. They finally just became popular in the US, they had one of the biggest hits of 2009, and their old label just let them walk away? That's what I don't get.

Hopefully with the structure of the deal this way they also negotiated for the master tapes. That's what they should be after.

Like I said, we might find out more about this in the coming weeks or days, but until then I will continue to question it. Even if the new label did buy them out, I still don't understand. There have been so many bands with label disputes, there have been plenty of bands unhappy with being tied in to a 7 album contract that doesn't put the best interest of the band anywhere near the top priorities, and many of these bands or artists have been just as popular as KOL. It just seems strange to me that this happened, but it doesn't happen more often if it is this "easy".

  • hopefully they get out of the spotlight for awhile with this new label

OBTN was ruined for me with all the overexposure... the real fans they made from all that will follow them now regardless of how they advertise the next record, and all the sorostitutes can just go back to listening to their club music

I hate to use this as a source, but it looks like this may all have been too good to be true...
